This is such a heart breaking song Ms Marion , I can’t even tell u the philosophy / culture behind it .
I don’t know any good dad or mom that have not sing that to their kid in one point .
I just don’t . Although lovers can take it and sing it , is mostly a song that a parent loves .
I have vivid memories of my dad singing this later in life , when we ( sister and I ) on r 20s , and last time we both singed in his island house was 2008, two days b4 he passed .

It's odd how much more poignant the lyrics are when I imagine them about my daughter. Now you have me crying!
I hope I didn’t make you too sad my dear! Some songs do that to me too...they hold such memories. In my case it’s more recent songs that my son Graeme loved and introduced me to. They are very bittersweet when I play them...I recall him playing them first and asking me if I liked them...I usually did because we had very similar musical tastes.

Works now. A lovely performance of a song with simple lyrics telling of a time when things were not simply bought, worn & then thrown away having no emotional value or virtue.
