Gerry Rafferty was a giant in the music industry, and although he’s best known for Baker Street and Get It Right Next Time...also Stuck In The Middle which he recorded with the band Stealers Wheel, he wrote and recorded a whole catalogue of great songs. He was born in Paisley which is a large town to the north west of Glasgow, and which in the 19th century was the centre of the Scottish textile industry, giving it’s name to the “Paisley” pattern shawls which are still popular today. This is one of his songs which is possibly better known in the U.K. than elsewhere as it’s about Clydebank, neighbouring town to Paisley, which was where some of the greatest liners in the world were built in the 20th century. Shipyard Town.
Nice and bouncy. I was expecting something much more folkie like songs proclaiming that tears made the Clyde. The life of those people looks sheer horror to me in my so far off paradise.
He sadly drank himself to death...but he was a brilliant songwriter and musician.
Nice song! It sort of reminds me of the Traveling Wilburys but different of course.
Interesting info about the textile stuff
Glad you enjoyed.
