As today...30th November is St Andrew’s Day, I thought it was only fitting to post something Scottish, and I’ve chosen this beautifully poignant song by Dougie MacLean...it has such a tug at the heartstrings for any Scots exile like me. I’ll have a tear in my eye as I listen and raise a wee dram! Caledonia.
As an addition I'll add that St Andrew was important to my school and I was 'confirmed' on this day though I think that two weeks either side of that day I was not a believer. Peer pressure and a brief fling with the Classics Master's daughter pushed me to go along with everyone else to meet the Bishop of Oxford.
I have probably sung this song on stage more than any other and with several singing partners. I've of course known Dougie since the late seventies and Tannahill days. Bourne and macLeod performed in Smithers and MacLeod's propensity for alcohol became a legend here. I guess we could never afford Dougie. I saw him with Tannahill at the Vancouver Folk Festival in 1981.
Make it a dram. Forget the wee.
A good idea!
