Beethoven “Oh Sweet were the Hours” a Scottish song. Heard this, this afternoon and thought of Marionville. Apparently Beethoven wrote a lot of songs with Scottish themes.
Oh sweet were the hours, when in mirth's frolic throng
I led up the revels with dance and with song;
When brisk from the fountain, and bright as the day,
my spirits o'erflow'd, and ran sparkling away!
Wine! Wine! Wine! Come bring me wine to cheer me,
Friend of my heart! Come pledge me high!
Wine! Till the dreams of youth again are near me,
Why must they leave me, tell me, why?
Return, ye sweet hours! Once again let me see
Your airly light forms of enchantment and glee
Come, give an old friend, while he crowns his gay glass,
A nod as you part and a smile as you pass.
Wine! Wine! Wine! Come bring me wine to cheer me,
Friend of my heart! Come pledge me high!
Wine! Till the dreams of youth again are near me,
Why must they leave me, tell me, why?
I cannot forget you, I would not resign
There's health in my pulse, and a spell in my wine.
And sunshine in autumn, tho' passing too soon,
Is sweeter and dearer than sunshine in June.
Wine! Wine! Wine! Come bring me wine to cheer me,
Friend of my heart! Come pledge me high!
Wine! Till the dreams of youth again are near me,
Why must they leave me, tell me, why?
Yes...I am slightly familiar with some of this set of songs on a Scottish theme, Beethoven was commissioned to arrange the music based on already fairly well known Scottish tunes, folk songs and poetry, some by well known Scottish poets and rhymers, such as Robert Burns and James Hogg. He is sometimes wrongly believed to have composed these pieces, but in fact he only set or arranged them. They were first published in Edinburgh and London in 1818...and then in Berlin in 1822. Here’s another excerpt from this opus 108.
I realized the songs were established and he only did the music arrangement. I kind of doubt composers actually write the words to their music. Still, I found it very nice.
Hope you are managing this 'quiet' time. Here we are having an unusually mild season. Yesterday was sunny so I took a 3 + mile walk and took some nice pictures of the sea and some homes.
@JackPedigo It’s unseasonably warm here at present too, I have turned the heating off as it was getting too warm this evening....its 11 pm here and almost bedtime. The weather is forecast to get a bit colder on Monday...but still not really what I’d call wintry. My son Neil is coming over from England on a visit for a few days on Sunday, we changed our plans from me going over to visit him and his family for Xmas because we thought it was too risky for me to travel on the plane etc.
@Marionville I agree, it is.
