In 1829 the 20 year old German composer Felix Mendelssohn visited Scotland including the seas in and around the Western Isles. He was struck by the wildness and majesty, especially the Isle of Staffa and Fingal’s Cave. . It inspired him to write the Hebridean Overture, first performed three years later in London on this day...14th May 1832.
