Cossack music for us today. Leonid Kharitonov and the Alexandrov Red Army Choir sing traditional song (1969) ...Dark Eyed Cossack Girl.
I wonder if being in the choir makes life easier than being in the rest of the Red Army. It was certainly true for me at my hellish "public" school. We had one day a year adventure to places. I sung a solo in Winchester cathedral in one of those outings. Every year we sang in a Peckham boys club supported by my school. I got friends with recurring meetings. We also played table tennis with them. Plus unlike other boys, we had the words of the national anthem and Psalm 91 (Whoso dwelleth under) in front of us, We did not need to memorise the words of anything!
I think it is bound to be quite cushy to be in the Red Army Choir, and the elite Russian Gymnastic display team or any other prestigious specialist unit. This is exactly the same as in any country’s armed forces’ sports or music units. A friend of mine married Pringle Fisher who was Scottish International Rugby Union Captain in the 60’s ...he was also in the British Army, rank Major..in the Royal Medical Corps., and was a qualified dentist. Between playing rugby for his country and for the Army...I don’t think he had time to do much tooth-pulling as a day job until he retired from the Army and went into private practice in Edinburgh.
