Talk about National anthems in an earlier post got me thinking about this Scottish song which has become the unofficial national anthem…and will probably be adopted as the official one when Scotland regains its independence as a sovereign nation once again.

The trouble with national anthems is that the tune is most often beaten to death. Finland's Sibelius unofficial (I believe) is one of the only that retains its beauty.
But singing about a defeat of a neighbour when ultimately you lost is an odd choice for an anthem.
I find Rule Britainia a much more stirring anthem.

Not Rule Britannia for the Scots though…! 
No song in Gaelic would ever be chosen as a National Anthem…because very few Scots actually speak the Gallic!

I would think more appropriate would be a new song lauding full independence. Then you can go back to to your sheep & cattle rustling, border rape & pillage along with selling yourselves as mercenaries.
It’s not in the least a dirge for the dead…on the contrary it stirs up pride in the belief that we can run our own country better ourselves than any outsider.
