I’m bringing you a slice of nostalgia today…my nostalgia! With some great views of my native Scotland it’s Buccleuch & Queensberry Caledonia Pipe Band with the stirring tune Bonnie Dundee. This tune led many Scots regiments of the British Army into battle over the centuries.
Lovely scenery.
Yes…it is.
@Marionville Mind you, many would dismiss it as bleak!
Regarding castles, I cannot view them happily as I wonder how much slave labour and deaths were involved in their construction and furthermore how much oppression of the people they represent. I dislike my first name knowing that it was a Norman name. Many of the castles were built to maintain Norman rule over the British inhabitants. I accept that those inhabitants were largely foreigners (Saxons and Vikings and a very few Romans) who in the 1000 years before had pushed out the Celtic original inhabitants. The Mabinogion even suggests prior Celts who had been displaced by later Celts around 500 BCE.
@rogerbenham I mustn’t have your sensibilities I’m afraid…they were built so long ago I cannot feel empathy with those who lived in those times, which were for most people living at that time, pretty dire I should think. Conquest and subjugation seems to be the story of human history, it happened from the earliest times, and in the same way that I just regard beautiful cathedrals and churches as splendid buildings, without the religious connotations and all the persecutions etc that they represent, I regard the ancient castles in muchthe same light . The buildings are part of history and help us to understand it better than merely reading about it…I marvel at some of the architecture and the building techniques and am glad that we have preserved it as living history.
