Slack Key Guitar also known as Kīhō'alu, is just one of the styles of music to come out of Hawaii. Here is Ledward Kaapana playing "He Aloha No O Honolulu" a very gentle composition and one of my favorites, played by one of the best slack key guitarists.
It is not that very different from what I play. Why called slack key? No I do not play this music but the way it is done is very similar to a lot of what I do.
They loosen the strings to create this different sound. To be honest, I'm not a musician and I don't know a lot about the mechanics of it, but I sure admire the musicians who can make such beautiful music. I'll post more of my favorites in the future, maybe a video where you can see them loosening the strings first before playing.
@Julie808 This is played in standard key of G tuning. Slackening strings would make it lower.
@rogerbenham Here's a little background on slack key guitar playing and more examples with some of my favorite slack key musicians. [fraryguitar.com]
@Julie808 I do use the drop D tuning sometimes and I certainly have friends who go into open key tuning. The piece here is very similarly played to how I play and I could easily learn it.
Really lovely piece. I did not know about this guitar. It certainly makes wonderful music!
I put this piece on here a while back and I was amazed that it got ignored. What a talent.I have this song and some by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole and John Cruz. Love the sound. My last time in Hawaii I went looking for someplace that played the slack key style. I found some, but not nearly as good as this.
Oh, I just joined this group and went back a ways at the posts and didn't see anything Hawaiian, let alone this in particular. Oops! I'll look through to be sure I don't post duplicates in the future.
Lovely sound…thanks for introducing us to this Slack Key Guitar music and this musician.
Btw welcome to the group, I trust this will just be the first of many posts here.
