Andres Segovia, who was born on this day in 1893 in Madrid, is considered by most people to be the most accomplished classical guitarist of the last century. He was a teacher as well as an exponent and many other eminent 20th century guitarists studied under him. Here is an excerpt from a 1954 TV documentary where he plays variations on Mozart by Ferdando Sor….followed by Leylanda (also known as Asturias) by Isaac Albeniz..
He was a God to us early finger pickers. I was finger picking before the advent of the Stones or the Beatles who rather sealed the pop process of chord playing with picks. I had at least one LP of Segovia playing Bach. He combined classical guitar with flamenco.
The Albeniz piece became a standard classical guitar playing learning piece.
Segovia introduced us all to Nylon strings.
Is he in the Alhambra?
No…his body was exhumed from Madrid where it was initially interred and reburied in Linares in Jaen province, his birthplace, in a custom built museum and garden.
@Marionville I meant where he is playing
@rogerbenham Oh…right, I thought it looked Moorish in architecture, so perhaps it is.
Always enjoyed this sound.
Yes…classical guitar sounds so good.
I really enjoyed both of these guys Marje. They are so good on the guitar !!!
It’s the same man…Andres Segovia in both videos. He’s just playing music by different composers.
@Marionville I’m so dumb sometimes!!
@Redheadedgammy We all are!
@Redheadedgammy I get A+ in that department!
