I have always loved the sound of Steel Drums since the first time I heard a Jamaican concert at Midtown Plaza (America's first indoor Shopping Mall ) in Rochester, NY. when I was 8 years old. It is such a joyous sound.
About how Steel Drums are made...
Yes…I too have loved the sound of steel drums since I heard them back in childhood. Nice post.
I remember seeing steel drums once as a child in my village in the chalky Chiltern hills. They were far cruder than yours in the manufacture movie. I remember them as 45 gallon oil drums still with paint and writing on. Probably not nearly as tuneful.
Once my parents brought back steel drums from their Carribean vacation. We four kids had so much fun playing those steel drums!
My Dad was a professional jazz trumpet player in Detroit from age 14 (he lied about his age to get into the Musician's Union) until he died of cancer at 51.
In the 1950s, Dad discovered a tiny Japanese company whose reel-to-reel tape recording machine he felt would revolutionize the music industry. Dad formed a musician's stock club, with band members and their wives. Together they bought Sony stock each month.
Within 10 years, Dad and Mom earned enough money from dividends to travel. My family lived on a lake in Michigan with three sailboats. So my parents and three other couples flew to the Carribean islands and rented a large sailboat. They brought their scuba diving regulators (to control the air) and rented tanks on the islands.
Together they sailed from island to island, scuba diving for lobster for lunch. With their instruments, the men sat in with the bands in the evening. They returned home with bad sunburns and hair-raising tales.
Wow…that sounds idyllic for your parents!
