During Covid lockdown at the beginning of 2021, when concerts and touring was off the agenda for bands and artists, and a-ha had suspended their world tour, Morten Harket was invited to take part in The Masked Singer U.K. on ITV. The first video was our first intro on week one to the incogito Morten in the guiise of “Viking”. I’m including a video a week or two later when the judges still couldn’t guess it was Morten (if you really believe it) despite the fact that he was singing a slowed down version of a-ha’s biggest hit and his voice is so distinctive it is instantly recognisable!
I liked both of these.
Nice to hear Roger, just Morten singing with a mic inside that giant head on his costume and a backing track playing in his earpiece. He says he felt very disoriented and claustrophobic inside it, but he agreed to do the show because it took him out of his comfort zone where he feels the need to always be in control…this took the control away from him completely and put it in the hands of the producers of the show. I think there was an element of boredom too…just sitting around at home in Norway instead of being out performing onstage, his other two bandmates wrote enough material to fill a new album, so they kept busy during Covid lockdown.
That voice is instantly recognizable to those of us who love his singing! I still couldn’t believe they didn’t know it was Morten. How long did it take them to realize who it was?
Five weeks..and even then they pretended to be surprised! By then everyone else at home and in the studio audience knew!
