Cliff Richard was billed in the U.K. as our very own “British Elvis Presley” ….definitely something open for debate, but for purposes of this post I’ll just leave that one for another day! On this day - 28th August 1958, Cliff Richard and The Drifters released their debut single Move It which is credited as Britain’s first Rock n’ Roll record….
Uuuummmmm......no he was not even close to Elvis. When I heard that at the time, I wondered, HOW?????
I bought that single but not in '58. I was unaware of anything but school folk songs and classical music.
Yes I recall they called Cliff our Elvis. What we did not realise is that both were singing essentially Country Music.
….actually rock music was born out of negro American blues music mixed with country which morphed into rhythm & blues the forerunner of rock n roll. It was resisted and even banned on radio &TV stations in the USA when white artists such as Elvis Presley adopted it because it was seen as black music and subversive and lewd for whites to adopt such sexually explicit gyration and hip movement.
@Marionville Maybe, but Elvis sang Country and all those sloppy love songs of Cliff's were Country.
@rogerbenham No they weren’t Roger…sorry. Elvis sang gospel, blues and Rock …Cliff sang Pop Rock. Neither of them sang country,.
@Marionville The room on the second floor? Travellin' light? Living Doll? I love you? The young ones? Schoolboy crush? Theme for a dream? Voice in the wilderness?
I'd not call those rock but they sure fit into country slop music.
@rogerbenham I don’t think anyone else would’ agree Roger. I think it’s your definition of country music that’s at odds here. These examples you gave don’t fit into the country genre…they are what’s called pop or soft rock ballads.
