Yesterday @JackPedigo posted one of my favourite Scottish songs in this group. It was “My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose”…which is one of the most beautiful love songs ever written in my opinion. It’s by Robert “Rabbie” Burns, who is Scotland’s national bard, and it was originally actually written as a love letter, possibly to Agnes (Nancy) Maclehose with whom he had a brief dalliance, and a longer correspondence. He wrote what I’m reliably informed is his most recorded love song “Ae Fond Kiss And Then We Sever” for her. It was written after their final meeting and sent to her on 27th December 1791 on the eve of her departure from Edinburgh to Jamaica to rejoin her estranged husband who was an Army Officer and wealthy plantation owner. Burns wrote to Mrs Maclehose using the pseudonym ‘Sylvander’and she ‘Clarinda’.
There are several other songs he wrote for her, but as I already mentioned this is the most well-known and popular of them. It’s being sung here by Folk Rock Duo -Tomorrow Bird who are Jen Bird & Simon Driscoll. - Ae Fond Kiss
What a sweet yet sad love story! Lovely song.
Yes…it’s one I really love.
This is the version I first heard played & sung by Brian Osborne solo as part of the Blackpool Taverners weekly performances. Sadly this YouTube generated performance sadly sounds little like Brian. The empoverishment of analogue put into digital when the algorithm doing the job has probably been programmed by a hearing impaired American engineer?
Also note how Kiss is heard as Kidd further identifying American ignorance.
It’s still a very nice recording…the lead singer Mr Osborne has a very fine tenor voice.
@Marionville Brian certainly had. He died quite a few years ago. I had the pleasure & honour of having him & Pete Roger put on a pop up performance for me back in 86 the only time I returned. All the Taverners are now dead.
