I remember learning the American Folk Song Shenandoah when I was at primary school, we learned a lot of songs in the folk idiom from all around the world as well as throughout the British Isles. I always liked this particular song and the American Civil War history behind it…and today I’ve chosen a choral version by the Grammy nominated U.K. vocal group VOCES8…at a live recording session in Abbey Road Studios, London.
Wow, that's beautiful! Much more easy on the ears than I remember in elementary school with children singing in the classroom!
Yes…these guys are the elite of choral singers!
Beautiful version.
Yes…really lovely.
Indeed, not sung in 60 years.
We sang it in my choir a few years ago when we were doing a programme devoted to American music…
@Marionville I never sang in that sort of choir. Mine were all sacred. But at prep school 1956-1960 we sang quite a lot of old folk songs.
@rogerbenham That’s what I like about my choir …we have covered just about everything from Bach to the Beatles! Infinite variety and inclusiveness …catering for all tastes and musical inclinations.
@Marionville There are at least 2 small choirs doing that here. I guess I like the old classical. Whether I will be ever able to sing again remains to be seen. 16 hours of coughing up bile rendered me into whispers which now is little more than 1/3 rd speaking. Singing but a series of croaks.
I haven't thought of this song in quite some time. This rendition is very beautiful.
Yes…it’s a very lovely song anyway…
Thanks....how about this for contrast?
I love Harry Belafionte…although I think he sings this one just a tad on the slow side.
