Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov was born into a Russian aristocratic family in 1844 and from an early aged showed prodigious musical talent, however his family believed composing music to be an unsuitable career for him and instead he embarked on a career as an officer in the Imperial Russian Navy. He composed his first symphony whilst at sea, and many more subsequent pieces followed, until eventually he resigned his commission, becoming a full time composer of great repute. He was inspired to write the orchestral piece Scheherazade - by a mixture of the music he’d heard whilst visiting India and the Middle East and reading The Arabian Nights /also known as One Thousand and One Nights, when he was a child. Here it’s performed by Philadelphia Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Riccardo Muti.
Yes, lovely music. Very much part of my schooling.
I knew you’d know this miscues and the background of Rimsky Korsakov
Very beautiful, as are the images. Another composer I'll have to search out for more, thank you.
His most famous piece is probably The Flight Of The Bumblebee”
@Marionville Omigosh, I know this! So I knew of him after all. Clearly I need to learn more.
My mother had this record and I would listen for HOURS, imagining the woman's voice.....thanks Marion!
It’s my pleasure…glad I posted it.
