Hamish Imlach - Cod Liver Oil and the Orange Juice
I remember the obligatory daily dose of NHS orange juice & cod liver oil as a young child. They were handed out free to all families with children under ten after WW2, in order to strengthen and keep healthy the new generation of children whilst food rationing was still in place and illnesses of malnutrition such as rickets and TB were rife.
I remember cod liver oil at my prep school (1956-1960). We had to line up when matron gave it to us. I hated it. Then later they gave us malt extract (yummy). I remember 1/3rd pints of milk but not orange juice.
@rogerbenham The orange juice was thick almost like a purée…I think it was probably only the pre school age children who got it. I remember the big glass jars of “Virol” malt …it was like sticky toffee. It was still available when my two boys were toddlers…I used to buy it for them, and they loved it. Mrs Thatcher was the one who stopped the school milk. They called her “Thatcher the milk snatcher”!
@Marionville Thatcher the milk snatcher was minister of education at the time. She advocated for comprehensive schools but liked private schools.
