Mark Knopfler guitarist & composer was born in Scotland to an English mother and a Jewish Hungarian father who fled the Nazis to settle in Britain in 1939. The family moved to his mother’s home town of Blyth near Newcastle-on-Tyne when Mark was seven and from that day on he became a ‘Geordie Boy”, like the one he refers to in. - Sailing To Philadelphia…live 2009.
I so love this song!! Mark is so damned good on that guitar!!
He’s just about the best around I’d say..
No attention given to the finger picking guitarist behind him, nor to the keyboard player. It would have sounded very different without them.
I’m sure they were acknowledged by name by Mark Knopfler on the night at the concert … however Mark Knopfler is the star of the show …it’s his music, written and performed by him in concert on stage, and it’s his name that sells the tickets, him that people principally go out see and hear on the night.
@Marionville Pisses me of! They showed the drummer doing what all drummers do. I was not as impressed with Knopfler as I have been. What he did was pretty easy.
@rogerbenham He’s one of the most talented guitarists in the world, perhaps that particular performance wasn’t his best. I picked the song because I like the words and the message …it doesn’t necessitate him doing one of his undoubted virtuoso guitar performances. I think you’ve got a bee in your bonnet about drummers, you’re always complaining about them. I don’t expect everything I post to be liked or appreciated by you or everyone else…so its fine to say so…and you certainly say so!
@Marionville When I dislike your posts I have stopped commenting. My taste in pop music is rapidly dwindling.
@Marionville I wanted to see what the guitarist was playing.
I don't think I've heard him outside of Dire Straits, but I really like the feel of this ... and I've always loved his voice.
I posted another of his songs this morning in Music Fans group ….the theme from the movie Local Hero. He’s composed & recorded lots of music outside of Dire Straits. I love his voice too!
@Marionville Oh! I'll go check it out now ... and clearly there's lots more I need to catch up on.
