The ”American Blues” is a fascinating music genre…originating not in the Deep South of the USA…but on the African continent where black American slaves themselves originated. They brought their music with them and they merged it with the mainly white religious & folk music of early immigrant America and it morphed into “gospel music” and “the blues”. They sang it in the fields unaccompanied, or after work with just one solitary harmonica, banjo, or later a guitar. The Mississippi Delta is where “the blues” were nurtured and grew into the music we know today. John Lee Hooker is recognised as probably the best blues artist of the latter half of the 20th century. One of my favourites from him is this song which he did with Rock n’ Blues band Canned Heat who were formed in 1966 in Los Angeles - Whiskey & Wimmen, 1971…
I used to like this a lot when I was at university.
I still like it a lot…
@Marionville Well this one was rather stuck on one chord.
@rogerbenham Yes…a lot of great tunes have been. But the blues is about storytelling more than most other genres…the lyrics are all important..
@Marionville Yes, I agree. In 1969 I was in RSA and heard on Zulu radio raw blues expressing outrage at the government and the sorrows of teir life. Kinda like the blues of the twenties but more pain.
