I went through a period in my early teenage years, as well as being introduced to and loving rock n’ roll & the music of Elvis etc,, listening to and appreciating the classical canon of piano concertos…Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky etc., and this one by Mozart. # 20, performed here by young English pianist Martin James Bartlett and Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie. It is still a favourite listen for me today
My dad loved classical music and his favorite composers were Mahler, Sibelius and Nelson. An uncle adored Wagner and whenever we went for a visit he would turn the music of Wagner way up until the house shook. I loved Mozart and got most of his works through the Time-Life collection. Lated I advanced and moved on to Beethoven. Then on to Mahler and Sibelius and now chamber and the one piece the shows his true genius is back to Beethoven Grosse Fuge.
It was probably considered at that time to be outrageously outre and experimental….a bit like Stravinsky or Shostakovich’s music a century or so later…
@Marionville Exactly, when one first hears it, without knowing the details, one would think as you said. My late partner and I once had a discussion about art. I said often the more you know about a piece the more you like it. She thought art could be appreciated for it's own sake. Then we started traveling and when we went to art museums I encouraged her to get the recorded messages about all the different pieces. For one of the few times (with her) I was right. She even found that Rick Steves as a cell phone app for the different museums.
@Marionville I agree
To me, this a level of Classical music I never understood or enjoyed. I moved from Beethoven and nine conducted by Karajan into Bach. Mahler came terribly late. Wagner was difficult until I got orchestral versions. But then I was stunned at his ability to use very simple leit motifs over and over and over without them getting boring.
My predeliction for Baroque came from a childhood immersed in Purcell and the cathedral choir singing Palestrina and Tallis.
When I was around 8 or maybe 9, someone gave my mother an album of classical records and I used to amuse myself by listening and making up dances. (I can't even begin to imagine what that resembled. ) I never knew the names of the composers or anything about the music--only that I ''felt'' it somehow. Now, I wish every child could at least hear and "play" with classical composers.
Thanks for this, M!
Glad to post something that brought back the happy childhood memories Pam.
