On St Patrick’s Day, I’m posting probably my favourite traditional Irish song, but there are many favourites. Carrickfergus is certainly up there with the best and it had often puzzled me that the song mentions both the title town which is in Co. Antrim and also Kilkenny which is around 200 miles further south and the words of the song talk about swimming or going by boat to Ballygrant which is near neither…however I discovered this on Irish Central and now the words fall into place and make sense….

I’ve chosen this version amongst scores by a variety of singers and groups such as Joan Baez & The Dubliners. It’s performed live at Slane Castle, Co.Meath by Irish group Celtic Woman’s Orla Fallon on the the Irish harp, and is simply beautiful….
Beautiful and I noticed she must be a true Irishwoman with her red hair.
Yes…there are quite a few redheads in Ireland, although they’re in the minority. The majority of Irish people have dark hair.
@Marionville I know, just being silly.
Beautiful song, & CW is a fantastic group!
Yes…they are.
Such a beautiful song, it brought tears to my eyes. Thanks for the link where I found the lyrics and info on the song.
I love it too…we sing it in the choir from time to time, it’s always a joy.
@Marionville I can imagine how beautiful the song is sung by a choir. I so wish I could listen to you and your group. Maybe I need to start planning that trip to Ireland I've been dreaming about. I turn 70 this year, so wouldn't that be a fun thing to do......
@Redheadedgammy I’d love that Rhonda…you could stay here with me as a base.
@Marionville There are two reasons I want to see Ireland, first because of finding out last year that I am half Irish, and second to meet you face to face Marje. I don't think you realize how much your music groups here have meant to me. The past 5 years of learning to live on my own has been tough, but music has helped me get through those years. You, have been instrumental in showing me just how much great music is so healing for the mind and body. I very much appreciate you offering a "base" for me to stay whenever I come. Once I figure out if a trip is possible for me, I will let you know. Thank you from the bottom of my heart Marje.
