Morten Harket - Natten. This live performance on Norwegian TV has him singing a song from his solo 1993 album which he released shortly after a-ha split up for the first time. The album is called Poetenes Angelicum and it’s the poetry of the Norwegian poets set to music for the first time. Morten is my favourite singer and whom I admire for his intellect and humanity as well as his voice which spans almost 5 octaves. In this song he displays his mastery of voice and breath control using only his lower chest register...it is much harder to control the voice when singing in this subdued manner. Then in contrast he sings Fra Templet from the same album in a completely different register...his head one, but still completely subdued and controlled.

I like the whole album, and the fact that he lets the words and music take centre stage. He doesn’t overpower the poetry with his voice, which is restrained and unlike when he sings pop and rock numbers. You can hear that he is feeling the words and music and is allowing himself to be used as a conduit, knowing that if he unleashed the power he undoubtedly has, it would ruin the whole effect. If you are not aware of the full power of his voice here he is singing the vocals on one of the bands best known hits, and you will see what I mean....here is Manhattan Skyline live in the studio in Oslo in 1991.
@Marionville Yes I see your point. Not music I would choose to listen to but each to their own. "Don't want to try again" definitely not my taste.
@rogerbenham I didn’t think it would be...I just wanted to illustrate that he is not a one dimensional pop/rock singer..but a sensitive and versatile vocalist who can sing all manner of diverse music. Here he is singing a hymn with Norwegian boys choir Solvgottene...this unbelievably when he was 28, but only looking around 16, it was 1987 and 2 years after he and a-ha had taken the world by storm and when he was already an international pop star.
