I learned this song from Northerners when at university In Durham. But to different words and music. Very odd. The Ellen Vannin was the name of a mail ship that went down in Liverpool bay in a frightful storm.
We just happened to have a folk music club meeting 100 years to the night December 3rd 1999 so it was a must to sing this song.

You have hit on the reason for the difference. Ellen Vannin - a Manx name for the island crops up everywhere . One video is the UNOFFICIAL anthem -sung by BEE GEES . There is an official one too -google it. The other is simply a folk song -plenty more of those still remebered on the island, Folk dance too. I love them all obviously but sadly negelected lately
