Opening the email I received the latest from Paul Oosting, Director of Getup, Australia's "grass roots" ginger group. As I couldnt find a url link that would allow everyone to read the proposal I reproduce it in full (the links may not work).
The City without the Murdoch Press
Did you know there's a city in the UK where Murdoch's biggest British paper, The Sun, has been successfully boycotted for more than 30 years?1,2
That's right. Following appalling coverage of a football stadium disaster in 1989, the people of Liverpool "kicked [Murdoch paper] the f*ck out of town".3 (I normally don't use profanities, but in this instance I believe it's justified.)
Now, in the aftermath of relentless, vicious coverage of lifesaving lockdown measures,4 commentators here in Australia are calling for all of us to do the same.5 And with former Prime Minister Rudd's record breaking petition calling for a Royal Commission into the Murdoch Media, the public has never been more ready to act.
But there's one thing you and I both know far too well: petitions alone won't be enough to break the Murdoch Media's stranglehold on our democracy. That's where all of us come in.
Today, I'm asking you – along with thousands of people across the country – to join the GetUp Crew by making a regular, weekly contribution to support the next ambitious phase of taking on the Murdoch Media.
Together, we can commission top investigators to comb through their business dealings looking for chinks in their armour, run targeted campaigns against their advertisers, and work to expose their corrosive influence in our elections. Better still, we'll work together to discredit their racist and climate-denialist reporting and paint an inspiring picture of what a diverse, independent media landscape should look like.
But taking on the Murdoch Press is risky business. As The Guardian's Amanda Meade wrote on Friday "anyone who takes on the Murdoch empire makes themselves a big target". That's why we need thousands of us, working together to chip in small, regular amounts – to make sure we're ready to weather their attacks.6
Can you join the GetUp Crew with a regular weekly donation to mount the next phase of our fight against the Murdoch Media's hold over our politics?

With the help of hundreds more members of the GetUp Crew, here's the plan:
Telling the story of what our media landscape should look like: We'll work with key policy and media experts to show what a thriving and diverse media landscape should look like. We'll tell that story through a powerful short film – featuring media experts, journalists and bushfire survivors – to showcase just how critical public broadcasting is to our democracy and society.
We'll go after the Murdoch Press, and we won't stop: By harnessing our people-power, we'll ramp up pressure on their advertisers, investors and contributors. Together, we'll make it clear: until the Murdoch Press change their racist, climate-denialist agenda - they're bad for business. We'll take a fine tooth comb to their company records and newspaper archive to relentlessly expose their dangerous editorial line and shred their reputation as credible news to tatters.
Landing a punch with academics and researchers: If we can line up an investigations team to deliver a groundbreaking report on the Murdoch Press' electoral interference, we can blow a lid on the secretive relationship between government Ministers and the Murdoch Press - and we'll examine just how deeply the Murdoch Press' has steadily eroded the standards of journalism in this country.
Right now, the community and country is fired up like never before to take on the Murdoch Media empire. And GetUp members have a key role to play.
Join the GetUp Crew by making a regular donation to help take on the Murdoch Media empire and its influence.
Australia's media ownership is among the most concentrated in the world.7 Our movement knows better than most that a free and diverse media is essential to a healthy democracy.
Murdoch's dominance is the very antithesis to that.
For years GetUp members have fought for press freedom and a thriving democracy. Together we've made ABC funding an election issue, called out attacks on whistleblowers and journalists and pushed for a free media.
We know taking on Murdoch's media empire is going to take an unwavering commitment – but with the help of thousands of regular, weekly donations, our movement will be fighting fit and ready to tackle this media giant, no matter what they throw at us.
It's the battle the GetUp movement was made for.
Can you become a GetUp Crew member, with a regular weekly donation and join the movement to create a strong, diverse, and independent media?
In determination and solidarity,
Paul
National Director of GetUp
