ok who can explain these very odd American elections? What are these mid terms? ARe they voting for.....er....like a senate? They can't get rid of Trump in the mid terms can they? But they can clip his wing by reducing numbers. Is that right? AND is it true they only have two parties? Not like our Greens, Dems, One nation, Fam First, Sex Party etc?
If you could keep it simple for me, I'd appreciate.
One way other the other: The system stinks!
I see why so many Americans don't vote now. Shit.
So many of us don't vote because the system is rigged. So mind-numbingly, obviously rigged, and so many of our votes simply do not count. Between gerrymandering and the electoral college, we are able to call the winners of national elections before the polls in half of the country are even closed.
@ponderingatheist Becomes a republic to get freedom from the crown. Creates electrol college.
You know, it occurs to me that essential problem with the US electoral system is its total lack of a reform mechanism. All democratic based electoral systems have modernized and changed over time, through legal means. Look at the rotten electoral systems that used to exist in the UK and elsewhere, including here in Oz. But the US folks always say, this is how we do it in America. We're America, and we do it our way! And any changes they do make, make it worse! Like allowing egregious corporate funding. And who has the final say there? The Supreme Court, a right wing puppet show most of the time. Without processes for renewal and change based on the evolution of the country, any electoral system is doomed.
Someone once said that, " A nation created from or by conflict/war shall forever be at conflict with not only itself but with all others as well." To my mind America has been travelling that path since its inception and it is a very fast downward path to boot.
IMO, IF anyone can actually explain in plain language how, exactly the Seppo Presidential Elections work I'll be truly astounded.
I've NEVER heard of a more Screwed Up system that calls itself a Democracy than the American System.
You are right, because the framers never believed in democracy, even in a representative form.
America is not a democracy, in any real sense, and never has been. It's an oligarchic republic, under the rule of a mainly white military industrial corporate state complex, which, under threat, is resorting to minority right wing rule to maintain its power against the changing racial and cultural profile of the country. Even the Democrats, with their determination to end Trump, have no intention, at least at the top, to facilitate major reform. A much bigger ground swell and rise of populism is needed for that. The genuine Left in America say so often. America preaches democracy, but its elites have not the slightest interest in practicing it. What our cousins in the US fail to see is that this sham is now plain for the world to see.
I do think that the next time the US has an election that external election watchers be sent in to verify a fair election. (Like in tin pot dictatorships) Clearly the US is incapable of holding such a thing, unable to prevent corruption at the ballot box and ensure a fair electoral system. It's almost sad.
If the mid term elections are disappointing, that will be the reason.
Oh, there are many of us who very clearly see the sham of our electoral process and our government as a whole. Most of us can only hope that those of you looking in from outside know that this isn't the majority of Americans. That while there are some absolutely horrible people in this country, the overwhelming, vast majority of us are simply too exhausted to pay attention anymore or are so very easily distracted by bright sparkly things that they have no clue what is really happening. Sadly, many of them have no interest in even discussing it on any real intellectual level. It is rather frightening, to be honest.
@ponderingatheist yes, probably sadly true. And this is exactly the numbing down of the population that autocrats thrive on, whenever autocrats exist.
I’m with you. Just a hint at what they are up to would be great. From my ‘bear of little brain’ position it seems like an election for no real reason so I wouldn’t mind knowing what the reason is!
who can produce the biggest or the smelliest, for all i care. it's all humus... or humor?... to me.
