Ah, the old wood and corrugated iron dunnies, aka the long drop, blowfly central, squat and swat, pee and flee, parliament house, etc, etc, they had innumerable names to describe them.
I can still remember when actual toilet paper was a luxury and we used squares cut from newspapers to do the necessary 'paper work' after the motions were passed, and the flies in summer, the Red-back Spiders, walking up to it when it was pouring rain or freezing cold or hotter than a lizard on a tin roof in a heat wave.
I, for one, don't miss them in the least.
This iconic dunny or thunderbox looks innocuous and rather picturesque. I refrained from even opening the door … So I don't know whether the dunny was really in use.
@PontifexMarximus LOL, the one pictured was a bit more fancy with the lawn, etc, around it than the ones that used be found around this region years ago.
When I was a kid, for a joke I painted a sign on the door of one that read " Restaurant- eat all you like Free of Charge," funny how no-one saw the funny side of it though.
@Triphid I found it attractive enough to stop and take a photo …
@PontifexMarximus That's great since they've disappearing for decades and were an integral part of human history ( or should one say 'shitstory' LOL).
Can you, perhaps, remember the very old Aussie riddle that used to go around?
Q. What has 4 wheels and flies?
A. The Dunny Cart doing it's rounds.
