Conversation with another member has just jogged my memory with the following history:

The funniest Returned Services League story I heard was that of Mumble's wife. Mumbles was a retired scaleyback (ship's stoker) from Cornwall who hid his inherent shyness & kindness behind perpetual drunkenness and mumbles.

His wife, Doris, was a beautiful minded gentle Malay woman who carried the radio for a British squad in the jungles in WWII.

She applied for full RSL membership and was told to pi# off because she was a woman and a Malay. Consequently she returned with her discharge papers from the British Army, made them apologise and give her full membership! Doris died 20 years ago and I doubt Mumbles is still alive though, unless cremated, he would be well pickled!
Thanks Roger for jogging my memory to remember two lovely human beings.
Vale Doris & Mumbles.

Ah yes, the wonderful RSL, my distant aboriginal cousin did 2 tours in Vietnam with Australian Army but was also denied membership of the RSL.
I'll leave it you to guess what their excuse/reason was.
