Two of my babies! I had a hard year with these guys: a big black ratsnake was living in my barn and raiding nests. But, I love snakes and I have no shortage of birds, so I left him alone. Now that the weather is cooler and the snake is probably off somewhere looking for a hibernaculum, my birds are tending productive nests. And these are the first babies I've handled since spring! I know they aren't objectively cute, but I think they're adorable.

Do you like roast squab? City pigeons were originally brought with the settlers as food; they forage for food on their own, but live near humans and have big, fat babies that are delicious to eat.

@Insectra I know. Most Americans now seem to prefer to know animals as pets rather than food, but even back in my childhood in the 50s and 60s in Haiti, with my missionary parents, we bought turkeys and chickens live, fattened them up, then butchered, and roasted them.

The process was so gross, it made a vegetarian out of me. I mean, have you ever SMELLED chicken carcasses being boiled to remove the feathers? It could put you off chicken for life.

Vultures?

@Insectra The beaks remind me more of vultures. Thanks for sharing!

What kind of birds are they? Those are pretty big babies. I love their coloring.
