At One time I worked a lot with a wood lathe. I will be getting back into it again but I've made some really incredible pieces. I would love to meet some other people that would be interested in sharing our art together. This is my favorite piece and from what I can find out no one in the whole world does anything like this.
I have dabbled with wood lathe work. I am curious about the area towards the center that looks like texture. It looks like relief carving, but it is hard to tell what it is.
Looks like a layer of birdseye maple, I use that technique in many pieces

To me it looks like a root burl, laminated to another piece of wood. I think the textured part could be some lightly decayed wood that was exposed as the bowl was shaped.
