How do you carve whalebone? What tools do you use? Would you ever carve on it like scrimshaw...or would it be too porous...
A lot of whale bone is porous as you say, but this piece is from the elbow (the side fin). One of the solidest parts for carving. Extremely solid actually. I use a hacksaw and dremel for cutting out the main shape, then files and sandpaper to get the shape, slowly getting down to a finer and finer sandpaper grade until I'm finally down to 2000 grit which polishes it. I love scrimshaw and I had intended on adding designs to it as posative major events happened in the life of my fiance who it was gifted to, but due to her recently leaving me for an abusive psychopathic woman beating rapist, she has now given it back to me along with everything else I ever gave her, so it will remain blank and never evolve now, apart from the chew marks in it from her dog trying to eat it.
@Herbie Well I am sorry about it's unpleasant history. But it holds a simplistic beauty, so try to enjoy that over it's dicey first home...hugs...
@Freespirit64 I kinda like that it has history. Gives it character hahaha. And the time she had it was very pleasant, so there are many good vibez that have been put into it.
Wow Respect! That is beautiful!
Thank you for your kind words
