NewRiver Gorge, WV. The newest National Park. We went to climb mostly but the weather had other plans. We hiked the Endless Wall Trail.

More ice and snow than I expected. In the shady parts, the trail was shear ice-over-snow sloped perpendicular to the desired direction of travel. Exciting. Flat Top Mtn, VA, 4001 ft, 7mikes rt

Went back to the MarbleYard today. A little brisk but pretty too. That middle photo is supposed to show how some of this granite has patterns not unlike what water might have caused. Any geologists in the room?

In the search for new trails, I investigated Elephant Mountain. A book from 1984 promised a steep trail and excellent views. The spur from a bigger trail towards the mountain was faint, but findable, but it slowly faded. It had all the overgrown ...

I joined a Meetup hike last weekend on the Historic Roanoke Horse Trail. It runs parallel to the parkway and there was constant car noise, and often in sight of homes. It's obscure and rarely used though, so significant for locals who have hiked ...

This is about 50' tall, called the Bluestone Amphitheatre in Amherst county, VA. We climbed last Friday. That's my son posing. Colorful rock, yes?

Today we found plane wreckage on a 1943 crash on a nearby mountain. Debris is scattered on a steel hillside with a vague trail. The plane was a twin engine B-25. Supposedly they were given clearance to fly at 3000 ft, and hit the 4000 ft ...

Did the house mountains trails today with a Roanoke MeetUp group. 10 plus miles. Some leaves just starting to turn. Awesome views of the Blue Ridge, and a great group of hikers. And the weather! Cloudy, high of 65.
