So you may have noticed that Signal's service was down yesterday. Since the day they released the app until Thursday they had 10 million downloads on Google. Thursday their user base jumped to 50 million in less than 24 hours. Apparently it's challenging when your service grows that much that fast. They just announced that they are up and running again.

The funny part is the co-founder of Signal is also the co-founder of WhatsApp, who received i think about 2 billion dollars from Facebook for the company.
Facebook said Whatsapp would operate seperately and user info would not be integrated and aggregated. Well apparently they did integrated it in 2016, through a series of small privacy updates.Then a few days ago WhatApp gave a new privacy update that specifcally listed all the info they were sharing with Facebook and the shit hit the fan.
When Elon Musk tweeted "Use Signal" that was all WhatsApp users needed to switch over to Signal.
Telegram is probably kicking rocks wishing Mush had endorsed them lol.

Signal is cross-platform, not linux specific. 
I'm guessing (some of) the 'surge' is related to privacy-needing Trump supporters.
