I'm so excited for this. The Canadian Government invests $153 million into plant-based protein development.
As mentioned in the article, part of this initiative came about because of the demand for and success of the Beyond Burger at the fast food chain A&W. The vegan community mobilized to get everyone to let A&W know that we appreciate their effort by buying the Beyond Burger, making sure it stays on the menu. Most of their restaurants sold out immediately and it took weeks to restock to meet the demands. I have to say that I don't like Beyond Meat products because they look too much like meat!!! I make my own veggie burgers and prefer Tofurky or Yves for other vegan "meats". But I did buy the Beyond Burger (way overpriced for what you get) once to contribute. There has been a huge increase in the demand for plant milks overall that I'm seeing a greater variety in the only grocery store in my tiny rural town.
Have not had the burger yet but will do so soon.
I ner imagined that eating at A&W would be a vote for vegans. Life is so funny.
That is a brilliant use of research funding.
In addition, the nation would save a fortune if the population ate plant based diets.
Great start.
That's great. I was in the local co-op today and I notices some "Beyond Meat" being sold. Several companies have started the program here with investor money. There is a huge demand.
You Canadians make me so jealous! Good on 'ya!! That is very exciting. Maybe some day the US will catch up to y'all again.
It will also create jobs for the prairie provinces like mine. We have been hurting economically from the slump in the oil industry. We are already growing these crops here. Instead of feeding them to livestock, we can feed them to people.
