Split green pea and tomato soup...
First time making it...
I used the following ingredients :
Four cloves garlic
Two medium onions
Eight ounces dry split green peas
Two medium tomatoes
Smoked paprika
One cup white rice
Chicken broth (or veggie broth if you prefer)
Salt
Black pepper
Red pepper flakes
Split green peas are very high in protein, fiber and magnesium... ! Iron too... First time buying it... No pic as I'm still cooking it but it tastes great!
I fixed this last night and it was delicious! It is now in my recipe book!!!
Oh.. That's wonderful! Thanks Gammy
What no ham bone?? Great, thank you.
I actually asked for a recipe for split pea soup and was told to use a ham bone or ham but I wanted vegetarian soup so I used the smoked paprika instead
@Cutiebeauty I've copied it and will make it. Winters are soup time. One question, is the rice cooked or not?
@JackPedigo I actually cooked the rice last, in the soup to thicken it but you need to watch carefully or it will burn in the thick soup...
@Cutiebeauty Okay, next question, how long to cook the soup? I often use brown rice (Basmatti). I pre-soak it for several hours but it still takes 45 minutes to cook. White rice the same but cooking time is only 15 min. (after soaking).
My late partner was an expert on cooking rice and taught me. It was funny when we got Japanese students living with us she would ask them to help her with rice. The first question from every one of them was: Where's the rice cooker? They couldn't believe one could cook rice without a rice cooker.
@JackPedigo you don't need brown rice with this recipe... The split peas have 50 mg of fiber per quarter cup... That's why I used white rice...
After sauteing the onions and garlic, add the peas and water and simmer until completely tender, about 1.5 - 2 hours ... Add more water as needed... Then add the diced tomatoes and smoked paprika and simmer again until the tomatoes break down...
@Cutiebeauty Thank you. I will add this to the recipe. I often use brown rice as it's more nutritious than white. White has all the nutrients milled off.
Sounds wonderful, thanks for the recipe!!
You're welcome... I like it very much...
Sounds yummy. I add cumin and za'atar to everything !
It turned out marvelous... I added some red pepper flakes for some spiciness... cummin sounds like an excellent idea for next time... Thanks for the suggestion
