There's generally two types of "I'll pray for you". One is the mean spirited "I'll pray that you see the error of your ways and stop being a godless heathen". Which is just being a dick. Reading this it seems to me that if the intent of such a comment is condescending, patronising or to have a 'dig' at us, then hard atheist applies. If the person means well and that's their way of trying to be nice or supportive, then you let it go or take it in that spirit. It's a case by case ...

It is odd when we left Children's Hospital the first time his mother mentioned to a latino Man we were Glad to be out of there after three days. The fellow smiled and said he understood his child had been there six months. I then noticed the quite large cross hung around his neck. It just was odd to me. My son and I are atheist and my son was getting out easy. This more than likely very religious man, according to anthropological studies would become more and more religious the more his child suffered. It just struck me as wrong and ironic. I really felt for him and his delusion. If his child did recover and it hope it does happen he will likely attribute it to God. I made a point of thanking and giving due credit to everyone I came into contact with, including the maintenance man. It was just an odd moment.

@David1955 Many think that libertarians are in the middle between reps and dems, I think of it more appropriately as a triangle with each faction in their own corner. Atheism as you well know is the absence of a belief in God. Though many wish to embed their religious beliefs into political ideas they are in fact separate entities. I don't see any way that libertarians could be associated with conservatives without a misunderstanding of what a libertarian actually is. It is much like calling an atheist a Satanist.

Betty comments on Feb 14, 2018:
Trust, belief, confidence, conviction; optimism are some of the synonyms for the word "faith". We can use any of them instead and it would have the same meaning. It is a personal choice and I think we sometimes use the word faith out of habit.
DavidLaDeau replies on Feb 14, 2018:

@Lewellyn3 I am really impressed with your knowledge. It is rare. Yep it's probably made up anyway. I take the bible for what it actually says. If i got a girl so drunk she did not know htat was happening and had sex with her it would rightly be called rape. So that and that alone is my justification for calling it rape. But you are right we don't know that it happened at all so we just can't speculate on fiction. Japeth is just a horrible story. I think of him as one of the bibles worst idiots. The story also makes god look very bad. For this reason I am glad and hope it is pure fiction.

DavidLaDeau replies on Feb 12, 2018:
I don't know if you jest or if you are serious. It by definition is a delusion. In psychology it fits the definition of delusion but gets a nice exemption from diagnosis. Group think is the major cause of religious thinking. When many people share the same delusion then perfectly sane people can buy into it. DavidLaDeau replies on Feb 11, 2018:
While I don't know after much study that pedophiles are attracted towards the priesthood, I can say any position of authority does attract them. Any profession that involves trust from children is vulnerable. Sexual oppression does in fact lead toward more sexual desires. The priesthood is very susceptible on both of these accounts. On a side note pornography sells the best in the bible belt so it is universally prolific, it's just that the priesthood is particularly in the spotlight and particularly prolific.

DavidLaDeau replies on Jan 29, 2018:
The cruades were in fact a religious war, the initial or first crusade was in response to islamic pressure. The following crusades were actually more driven by money and power for the Catholic church. The Inquisition was was started as a direct attack on the Knights Templer that the Catholic church was indebt to. The theory was simple, accuse the Knights Templers of being herotics and the debt would become nullified and they could confiscated their assets. Thats exactly what they did. There would have been no witch hunting at the time if it was not for the influence of Christianity. It only stopped during the time of the Salam Witch triles once the governers wife was accused of being a witch. It was stooped then by the government NOT the church.

DavidLaDeau replies on Jan 24, 2018:
@BlueWave to open a bag of worms..... There was a gay football player that was being harrassed by his team mates. It was stupid of the players and the media could not let go of it and the NFL handled it very badly. There were a few football players that beat their wives so the NFL in its wisdom decided to do public service announcement during the games to tell people not to beat their wives. I did not have a problem with this, They did. Byonce at the super bowl did a great half time show. The problem was it was all about glorifying the Black Panthers. That was simply racist.I would have been just as offended if someone glorified the KKK. I wanted to watch football to forget about racism, bigotry, domestic violence, gaybashing, and any general hate. When I watched football I was inidated with it. What ever happened to just watching a bunch of fellows play their hardest and team spirit?

@buck1977 That is very difficult. If they are suffering from a delusion than they do not know better. We would have to "know" they "knew" better. If someone is mentally Ill they by definition are not sane. If they are suffering from a delusion they are by definition not metally healthy. For this very reason religion is very dangerous. It by special pleading that allows the insane to be considered sane. Even with this understanding the mentally ill are still mentally ill.
