Is Social Democracy a revised version of Socialism by capitalists?
Krish55 comments on Feb 11, 2019:
It emerged to placate the working class in the West at the expense of "Third World" peoples. It succeeded in getting western workers to support capitalism and the intensified imperialism that funded social-democratic programs at home in the West. It is only "half-way" if you ignore the imperialism ...

@MikeInBatonRouge I was not dismissing the Nordic system. I advocate that for the US also. What I was objecting to was your repeated counterpointing Nordic socialism against the revolutionary socialism that emerged from the victims of imperialism. Many "Third World' countries tried to start on the path to a democratic Nordic-type socialism. They were met by US coups and invasions. To dismiss revolutionary socialism in such situations is a bit of clueless Western privilege. It wasn't the revolutions that were the problem; it was the Western continuous economic blockades, sabotage, and military opposition that caused the degeneration. To discuss socialism, we have to be acquainted with the facts of history. It is a bit infantile to have expected the Chinese and Vietnamese to have developed Nordic-type socialism given their history of being subject to imperialism. Given that and given that no one is advocating revolutionary socialism in the the US, it is simply ahistorical and unnecessary to dismiss revolutionary socialism.

Krish55 replies on Jan 24, 2019:
1. Capitalism is not an ideal. It is an economic reality. Neoliberalism and libertarianism are capitalist ideologies that try to explain away the inherent problems of capitalism. 2. Different forms of socialism emerge to solve different problems. A Scandinavian solution wasn't possible for Russia 1917, China 1949, or Cuba 1959. 3. You're correct that every society will need some aspects of free enterprise. However, that is different from allowing capitalist accumulation (and its consequent abuses) which is what capitalism engenders. One mistake socialists have made is not differentiating the two.

@MikeInBatonRouge Chilean democracy was destroyed in 1973 in order to install a dictatorship practicing neoliberalism. Neoliberalism works more subtly in the US. First, it cuts taxes for the rich and then budgets for the public. When the local democratically-elected governments can't function, they are then put under emergency management - composed of businessmen. These are the folks who decided to use poisoned water for Flint. To get free rein for their unpopular practices, neoliberals have to destroy or subvert democracy. China and India will quickly surpass our burn rate (pun intended) if they haven't already. I'm worried about surviving Trump. The biggest environmental problem is that we have way too many humans on the planet. The best thing you can do is to not have children of your own. Adopt all you want.
Krish55 replies on Oct 16, 2018:
You're ignoring the context under which people have kids. Five Africans have way less impact that one American. It's not the mere numbers but how they live. Capitalism creates economic insecurity that causes people to have more kids as insurance for when they get old. Socialist governments promote Public Health and birth control. Population is thus one symptom of the environmental problems of capitalism. Most importantly, capitalist rapaciousness directly causes environmental devastation.

Based on fact that I refuse to accept kings or queens be a right given by god... I will pass. Not my folk. But those who enjoy it... Rock On. I am not your enemy simply not a royalty friend.
Krish55 replies on Sep 23, 2018:
I agree with your critique of royalty. But sometimes royalty represents people's identification against a foreign power, in this case England. In Hawaii , for example, royalty represents a rejection of American colonialism. The Scots today are very left wing and socialist and oppose British imperialism. Identification with their nationalist past, even if it is a royal past, helps with this progressive movement to day!

@LiterateHiker It may to have do with lack of vocabulary. They probably don't know the words satiric, caustic, or ironic. So they use the word sarcastic as a catch all. I teach high school and my students tend to use the word sarcastic that way also. By the way, I have quite a few friends who have been on POF. I've avoided it because I simply don't like the name.

@Secular_Squirrel Your first comment is very simplistic. Violent crime is generally a product of poverty. This doesn't mean that every poor person is a violent criminal. Same with narcissism and privilege. Look, we have the capacity for both selfishness and sharing in our genes. The type of society we live in (competitive vs. cooperative) will determine how those are balanced in what behaviors we exhibit.

Krish55 replies on Sep 11, 2018:
@Secular_Squirrel Again, in looking at the development of early civilization and class-based societies, we will find the answer. The Warrior class enforced the acceptance of classes upon those who were exploited. Similarly, but more insidiously, the priestly Class got the downtrodden to accept inequality and injustice in return for supposed rewards after death… Today, these roles are fulfilled by the police at home and our military abroad. Our televangelists fulfilled a second role… Going back to the original question, it is no surprise that we find the highest level of narcissists in these groups and in politicians and businessmen. Narcissism is generally a product of class privilege!
