In both cases, you're usually the one that lets them. We tend to always have more control than we think we do, or want to believe. I know I ignored several red flags and passed up several opertunities to walk away before the damage was irreversible. I know I've made others lives better just by allowing myself to be a stepping stone, unfortunately. Hindsight is 20/20 though.
