A micro-study.
Our social order may be mostly controlled by a ‘profit driven mentality’...as in the way gold once drove people. I have a very skilled, hardworking craftsman here building a deck for me. He had high recommendations. Very little has been said regarding politics, until he was mostly finished! I did notice that he did not understand my sign for the rally, about the separation of children from their parents at the border. He had not heard about the ‘Trail Of Tears,’ for the Cherokees! He only remarked that people coming into this country need to wait their turn and come in legally.
But, as he finished the deck and I picked up bits and pieces of his opinions, it was clear he is a trump supporter! He lambasted Obama, when I told him that ‘China’s tariffs would kick-in today.’ Then responded with ‘what if Clinton had been elected?’ He does not think the ‘tariffs are going to be a problem!’ Some things he said, were repeats from the media. But, as our discussion got a little heated, he said with a visiable confidence..’trump does not have to answer to anyone!’ Even when I tried to point out, trumps criminal behavior over my lifetime!
This is a 51 yr old skilled person and now he has finished my deck and I find that there are 11 boards EXTRA. These are 10&12 ft long, (2by 6s), which cost about $25@. The way he worked was...I left my credit card # with lumber yard so that he could get materials as needed. So when he returns to do the ‘finishing touches,’ I need to know where those 2by 6s are going...as this makes no sense! And I intend to get print out at lumberyard today! One more note on this person’s character...he has not seen his two grown (20s now) children since they were very young. He does focus on money...this is just one trump supporter and as we talked, I saw examples in his thinking, similar to one of my daughters. This is what we are up against, in my opinion...honorable character means little to a big portion of this country. Morals and ethics...they matter not...where money is being made! Human beings bedamned! Where do we go from here?
Over the years, we've hired handy men to fix the roof and do various things. It's always a crap shoot the kind of person you hire. I"m in need of one now, and hope I can find someone reasonable and capable.
My need is a journeyman carpenter, since I'm contractor. When you hire someone on a contract, the person must be more competent than my need.
To hell in the proverbial, made in China, handbasket..
Charlene, do you think we are getting a little fast on the ‘finger’ trigger? I keep posting duplicates and not by choice!!!
@Freedompath I keep having that happen as well..it irks me no end..then folks "like" all the duplicates..ugh!
Well written post.
I blocked someone on this site who I thought was OK at first.
To keep it brief, this person supported the right of the homophobic cake shop owner to turn away customers. They then tried to convince me that they were not homophobic in any way (because they had officiated a gay wedding).
At the end of the day they were endorsing a culture that puts profits before people.
I do know what you mean! Some of us may be more in tuned, with people than others, too! Emotional pain, is pain and can break the spirit and for sure can disable a person emotionally for a time!
It seems strange to me that working people are Trumpies. Don't they know he wants to turn their Medicare into a useless voucher system? Don't they know he wants to reduce their Social Security?
Not to mention when these tariffs kick-in!
Yes indeed...good point. I expect prices will rise and we will have inflation. @Freedompath
Blocking, ledger boards, trim boards, stair treads, doubled or tripled joists and wastage. I always carried a minimum of 5% for wastage and another 5% for pilferage. I've seen this mentality before in skilled tradespeople, they work harder and have less to show for it each year. The money doesn't go as far and the taxes go up but the services to them go down so they blame the guy under them on the social ladder not the guys above him who are robbing him blind. The money doesn't go as far because the money isn't worth as much, it's all part of the shell game.
Yes, that has the ring of truth!
Pieces of shit are his supporters. Plain and simple they are greedy, hateful morons.
Where do we go from here?
Help register people to vote. VOTE Republicans out of office!
Last April with two Democrat volunteers, we registered 74 high school students to vote, during four, one-hour lunch hours. Wenatchee High School provided tables and chairs for us to use.
"Register to vote here!" I yelled, waving my arms and dancing with a big smile. "It takes two minutes! At this table! The media says young people won't vote. Prove them wrong!"
I collared students walking by: "Are you 18? Are your registered to vote?"
We will do it again in September.
@MissKathleen
I'm nothing if not determined. I always register the girls I mentor to vote, along with their parents.
Also, I galvanized my daughter, 28, to get 40 of her friends to vote in each election.
I send Claire links on how Republicans are poisoning our clean air and water, pushing to allow mining in our beloved National Parks, discriminate and strip rights from minorities, LGBTQ people, women and disabled people, end Pell Grants for low income students, and other atrocities.
"Forward to your friends," I urge Claire. She does.
some moments I feel militant and others I think back on fighting the same battles and now more at both the start and end of my adult life. I feel tired today
I can relate! There seems to be little time, for goodness to flourish...it is more like picking up broken pieces of your daily life! Everything seems too scattered!
