Regarding God's Ten Commandments

*The Ten Commandments, unlike most laws generated by most legal systems and processes therein, are authoritarian (as in dictated by a dictator in a dictatorship), not democratically arrived at by any form of due process.

*The Old Testament details the Ten Commandments three separate times. You have the original set in Exodus 20: 2+ which was the set, set in stone, which Moses broke. You have a third close to near set of the originals (really unnecessary duplication) that's listed in Deuteronomy 5: 6+. But, you have that second set in Exodus 34: 10+ which replaced the set broken by Moses and which presumable is THE set encapsulated in the Ark of the Covenant. The problem is that this replacement set is not only DRASTICALLY different from the other two recordings, but Commandments you wouldn't want to follow in a pink fit.

*It's a Tenth Commandment sin to have envy or jealousy and covet your neighbor’s slaves, but it's not a godly or a Biblical sin to actually have slaves! If God was opposed to slavery why didn't he issue an 11th Commandment "Thou shall not own another person" (i.e. - a slave)?

*If God doesn't want humans to worship other gods, then God took His bloody sweet time in letting humans (and a rather select group of humans from just a tiny geographical part of the world at that) know that since other gods ruled the religious / theological roost for many thousands of years before God turned up unannounced and uninvited to the party.

*The original Ten Commandments (although not the final version) we get rather unimportant stuff like no other gods before God, and no worshipping idols and no taking God's name in vain and do not work on the Sabbath, etc. So what's missing that any moral deity would have, and should have included? Well what about thou shall not commit rape; thou shall not commit genocide; thou shall not own another human being (slavery) [#]; thou shall, as parents love your children; thou shall not commit child abuse; thou shall not commit animal abuse; thou shall protect the environment; and of course thou shall endorse women's rights.

[#] That all the more the case given God's actions in Exodus - "Let my people go".

*The question really boils down to, couldn't YOU have done a hell of a lot better job in coming up with the Ten Commandments?

*Contrast the following Commandment in Exodus with Luke 14: 26

Exodus 20:12 (King James Version)
“Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.”

OR

Deuteronomy 5:16 (King James Version)
“Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.”

Hence…

Exodus 21:15 (King James Version)
“And he that smiteth his father, or his mother, shall be surely put to death.”

Exodus 21:17 (King James Version)
“And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death.”

Luke 14:26 (King James Version)
“If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.”

*Consider God’s ‘Thou shall not kill” Commandment in Exodus or in Deuteronomy.

Exodus 20:13 (King James Version)
“Thou shalt not kill.”

Deuteronomy 5:17 (King James Version)

“Thou shalt not kill.”

Now that apparently doesn’t apply to someone you know who 1) violates the Sabbath; 2) erects a graven image, or 3) takes the Lord’s name in vain. Then you are supposed to kill them!

And we all know about this contradiction.

Exodus 22:18 (King James Version)
“Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.”

Oh, and btw the 'Sabbath' is Hebrew for Saturday and NOT Sunday.

@johnprytz Only since Xtianity got its stinking feet in the door. Before that in much earlier times the week began on Monday ( the day of the Moon) and ended on a Sunday ( the day of the Sun).
But the Churches didn't take the Hebrew " sabbath" into account and decided that Sunday would be ' their' sabbath instead.
It just goes to show how early Xtianity was so screwed up doesn't it.

@johnprytz except thursday that belongs to THOR

@zenith01 Yep and Wednesday was originally known as Wodinstag - the day of Wodin (Odin, father of Thor)

Firstly, IF one has a good and in-depth knowledge of the " Goat-Herders Guide to the Galaxy" (aka the bible) one would realise that there are far more than a mere 10 Commandments to begin with.
Only the 'big' 10 got any real 'publicity' simply because some dip-shit named Moses claimed to have been handed them on some obscure mountain in a movie made from a book written by a long dead Governor of the New Mexico Territory back in the late 1800s- early 1900s.
Little known Commandments include;
Thou shalt NOT eat of the flesh of any animal of cloven hoofs,
Thou shalt NOT eat of the flesh of the swine,
Thou shalt NOT eat of the flesh of any creature of the seas or waters OTHER than fishes,
Thou shalt NOT lay with thy woman ( wife) for anything unless procreating,
Thou shalt NOT allow a woman to speak unless ordered to do so,
Thy children and women shall remain silent and obedient to you at ALL times,
that's just a few from memory, there are approx. another 27+ scattered throughout the " Goat-Herders Guide to the Galaxy."
All equally as ridiculous and dictatorial as the others, ergo, in my opinion, either this god thing is/was nothing more than a Tyrannical, Egotistical Dictator and Misogynist OR the Authors were wannabe Dictators and utter Misogynists.

@johnprytz An Egotistical God, is that the best you can do, Egomaniacal, Egocentric, Self- Aggrandizing, Misogynistic, Homophobic, Psychotic, Psychopath, Mass Murdering, Despotic Tyrant to say the very least, and those are just the ' good' points, LOL.

@johnprytz IMO, they do so simply because they are gullible enough, as were their parents before them, etc, etc, to believe almost anything they were told without even thinking to question it.
As I often refer to them, they are Sheeple, - across between people and sheep, bred to be almost mindless, demure, obedient, submissive things that are so easily controlled that they will line up in their droves to be ' fleeced' at a whim.

@johnprytz In my opinion it IS how you bring your child up from infanthood that decides whether or not they learn to be both critical and skeptical.

I brought my daughter up from infanthood to think for herself, to discuss, even in terms as per her grasp on language/grammar, etc, to question and to use reason at all times.
By the time she was about 4 yrs old she had worked out for herself that Santa Claus was just a story and Xmas Presents did NOT magically appear by themselves overnight, etc.
When she asked a question, any question at all, she was given the answer in language and terminology that befitted her understanding BUT always the TRUTH, hence she knew at an early age where babies came from, how things worked, why things happened, etc, etc.

And YES she was also taught to look BOTH ways before crossing a road, to be wary around strangers, BUT also to be kind and gentle towards others among numerous other things.
Ergo, HOW you choose to rear your child/children DOES have a DIRECT effect upon your child/children grow into adulthood and the kind of person they eventually become.

@johnprytz Nope, not interested in "Ruling" over anyone or anything, just living and enjoying living my life as I see fit, decent and socially acceptable.
Plus, I try my hardest to keep an open mind and perspective on things, political, social, ethnic, cultural, etc, etc, exactly the same as I taught my daughter.

@johnprytz Thank you and May your 'shadow,' aka memory, never fade and be forgotten. - an Ancient Egyptian wish of good fortune.

I keep forgetting that this is also an agnostic site. People seem to have a hard time shedding the lifetime of the "boss" ghost doctrine. The one "rule" that seems to permeate most religions is "Treat others how you would want to be treated." It seems like a good idea. All that other crap is just crap that humans have thrown in there & used for whatever their reasons.

Consider this: With all the crimes, misdeeds and atrocities that humans are capable of, the first commandment states Thou shall not worship other gods. To God that's number one. He doesn't like it and he gets jealous, that's why.

It's a strange concept that an all knowing and omni-potent God would have such down to earth feelings such as jealousy

@AmmaRE007 It kind of smacks of a few very human authors demanding and ordering that NO-ONE shall know of anyone else's works, etc, than theirs doesn't it?
Sort of saying, " You can read and acknowledge ONLY my stuff or I'll really get 100% pissed off at everyone."

1

Ler's face it. If Moses existed, he was both a great leader and among the greatest of con men. He took on the task of leading a very unruly, obstreperous desert nomads, and used many tricks to control them. When the group's behavior was so bad that it threatened to rip the community apart, he crated the "10 Commandments" to control that behavior, and told his group that they were God's chosen people if they would only believe in him and worship and the nomads believed him. believed him.

1

And FYI...there are 15 commandments

2

*If God doesn't want humans to worship other gods, then God took His...." Take note -- gods. The second states "No other gods before me"

There are other gods? God knows about these other gods? Interesting...very very Interesting.

Does that insinuate that we can have gods after him?
