No effect. They are different things. Both have reason as the "why" of existance.

Personally, I like and enjoy being an Aussie, I'm a free person here BUT I detest the way that Religions, Big Multinational Corporations, etc, etc, have hi-jacked the governments for so many decades to the detriment of both the country and the average people.
Atheism/Theism should have NO relevance on a persons patriotism what-so-ever in my opinion.

Aimed at American audiences where it seems godliness goes hand in hand with patriotism. Here in UK one can be fond of being English, Welsh, Scottish or Irish without , save perhaps in sectarian Northern Ireland, belief in a supernatural being.Madison and Jefferson hoped that church and state would be kept apart but some Southern states in particular see God and public service as bound up together. It is even difficult to make sheriff without at least an apparent belief in God, preferably the Judeo-Christian version of the Holy Scriptures.

When I was religious, I suppressed my critical thinking. Giving myself permission to reevaluate my beliefs also unleashed my critical thinking in general. Made me more critical of the crooks we refer to as government. I try to separate the idea of what this nation stands for vs what it has become.

Why would believing in God make me more pro-British?
Unless God is British.
Then your question might make sense.

If a god was real, I assume it'd have a british accent.

@CommonHuman To me he's Brooklyn Jewish

no. why would it? i still love my country. i still hate the criminals running it. what's that got to do with whether or not there are any imaginary thingies in the sky running the universe?

Sure has. Patriotism is bullshit to an atheist. Religious people believe in the afterlife. But there is no afterlife, so patriotism is a con to rob you of your most precious valuable, your life. There should be a new law: Let the ones that start the war lead the way.

Nope. Love Canada more today than ever. Living in the US and seeing what's happening here isn't hurting...also weed is legal

I have zero use for patriotism.
I don't give a shit about heritage or culture either.
My atheism has informed my view of just how fucked up this country is. I also dig deeper into actual history.
I tend to dismiss, with derision, those who insist we should show reverence for symbols, too.

Striking down "reverence for symbols" is a hill I hope I get the chance to die on, some day. I don't know if I could think of anything (non-violent) more potentially dangerous and wrong.

@Halfempty I'm in! 'Gater 2020

No. I remain equally patriotic. It has, however, completely killed my nationalism, which was toxic anyway.

When you don't believe that God thinks that your country is better than everyone else's and you start to focus on facts and logic, there is no way to support nationalism.

No. God was never what made this country great; it was the people and their hard work.

1

No, it has not

Why would it?

In a way I have become more patriotic. When one is religious one is taught to put God above all including country. Also, most Christians are taught that the Second Coming is immanent and not to worry to much about what is happening to the country because Jesus will set everything straight soon.

1

Being overly patriotic can be just as problematic as being overly religious.

1

Only when the song mentions God or something else religious. Otherwise, I tend to be.

1

A nation is not my religion so... No.

Patriotism gone 40+ years ago. Agnostic for similar period, though unrelated.

Hate that President is an ignorant fool.

1

I don't feel particularly patriotic. It was an accident of birth, not really anything to be proud of. I've never lived in another country.

Religion has nothing to do with it.

1

I am not particulary proud of being British or English, it actually seems weird. I am proud of being from Lancashire but it makes no difference to my lack of belief. Things are just so different for us.

1

Atheism hasn't affected any aspect of my life other than church attendance. As for patriotism, I love the land and loathe most of the popular sentiments.

1

I wasn't more or less patriotic back before I openly acknowledged my atheism. I do care about the direction of the country as a whole, but I never conflated my existential beliefs with the largely political dimensions related to patriotism.

1

Not in the slightest. Mine is less for what the country has become (hope the last 50 years will prove to have been temporary) than for the cumulative genius that made it possible.

1

It's total nonsense that being a "non-believer" can't have a moral compass and serve the country in any capacity. I fear religious nuts(Pence) who adhere to strict doctrine they create from a book of fairy tales(Bible).
