I've noticed that most members on the site, at least in my area are over 40. I find this surprising when there have been many articles and studies showing that ounger people re more likely to be atheist.

II am wondering... Does anybody have theories as to why so few younger people are on the site, when they re more likely to be atheist?

I suspect that religious identity whether a believer or nonbeliever is just not as important to the younger generation(s). What do you think?

It is refreshing to the older generation to be free from an environment that was invasive most of their life. These members have found a tribe here. The younger generation are comfortable in the tribe they have now.

In my case in particular, I was not really bothered with religion most of my life but I like to hangout with individuals that don't intersperse their dialogue with a supreme being and have rational thinking which lacks in my generation and environment as well.

I think religious identity and the fact that AG is not quite the "dating"site it's advertised as. People are constantly bemoaning the difficulty of actually meeting people through the site.

I have heard of soem sucess stories of peopel who met here, but for the most poart membership is nto up to the numbers for the site to work well for dating, s the "dating pool" is still too small. The site is just over a year old. Given enough tiem to grow, it may be much more viable to use the site for dating.

I think it has to do with the site. Most younger people are app driven, and I'm not sure this site is geared for smart phone usage. Also, younger people are more active with their friends, so getting on a site like this just isn't their focus. Bar or club on Sat night....or logging onto Agnostic.com to chat with a bunch of people who won't buy me a drink or have sex with me - hmmm, let me think which one sound more fun! LOL

EDIT - it isn't just this site. I am currently getting involved with my local VFW. Membership is going down (has been for years) b/c the perception is its a dingy smoke filled bar full of old codgers drinking domestic draft beers. And yea...that isn't far from the truth, but they do a lot more. Lots of men and women returning from Iraq/Afganistan, with all the emotional baggage that carries. I was in Somalia back in '92, and I am just now giving a shit (and willing to remember what I went through) about doing something to reach out and help them deal with stuff personally, or supporting the organization lobbying efforts in Congress to better fund VA health care. I don't think it's just specific to this site...but is b/c getting by is so hard....many don't have time for much else.

Younger people are too busy taking selfies and this is not much of a site for that. Try facebook or tinder or .....

I'm 75 and my daughter is 21. If I were 21, I wouldn't be on this site either although we are both atheists. I've got time on my hands and she has much more important shit to be concerned with and to do. She doesn't give a rat's ass about agnosticism or atheism or religion. It's just what she is. As we get older and can physically do less, such things mean more, probably because we can physically do less of the really fun stuff.

Maybe the younger people are too busy working & studying to spend time on this site? Or do not feel the need for a support group as much? The "Numbers" on this site really mean nothing, IMO

It's a lot easier to meet new people as friends or for dating when you are younger. Even if you are out of college, there's a good chance you are still in touch with your college friends, etc. Most of my friends have moved to other states- if not countries.. The ones I have in the area have multiple kids so they take their kids to the movies and plays we go to - the few chances we have to go out. Not going to work taking them to bars, etc.

I live in the South. Most of the young people I've come across down here have been indoctrinated into religion.
Then again, I haven't talked to a lot of people around here. I don't get out much.

Why the hell do y'all think I'm hanging out here so much?

Older people generally have more time for community, and are not so busy doing all the things that make you grow old quickly.
