I don't know that the government has any official position on the duration of human settlements in North America, but there are much older settlements.
yes they have a say ..and yes there are much older settlements.. but in this area.. the dates have been much sooner. Also, these are my ancestors lol so it strikes home more.
@AmmaRE007 I wouldn't trust any government position on archeological sites that wasn't backed by actual science even when we had a government that wasn't opposed to science. I don't know where exactly that site is, but the long house was one type of dwelling frequently used by Iroquois confederation peoples and perhaps the Lenape as well.
Wow! That's a really long house! How many people lived in something like that?
And yes, a link would be helpful.
@AmmaRE007,Is there a link associated with this? I've clicked all around on the longhouse photo, but haven't found one.
Could well be that my cheapo phone is just not cooperating.
An oxymoron. "...longer than the government likes to admit." The "Government" is not a single minded entity...it is a committee, with many entities within who do not even know you exist let alone being able to "admit" anything.
unfortunately they do know we exist and have been working to get rid of us
I understand that the government is not a single entity, however on this issue as a matter of policy they are united.
Communists! =0} ie COMMUNal living COMMUnity based.
so what are you saying? that you believe because their is a common root word that we are communist? Our Iroquoian government ( which Onondaga is part.) Has been operating as a democracy for well over 1,000 years.. OO well I guess I"m looking at the bunny face.. now. =0) so . funny...not serious? lol ok.. I'll back down lol
@AmmaRE007 Misunderstood. That communalism is not inherently a horrible thing. That it has been distorted by despots. That it can work when done in a democratic manner. As our government is based on the Iroquois model, community is also a positive contribution. Respect to you & the great 5 nations of the Haudenosaunee.
Few people realize that European diseases devastated the Native populations in the Americas kill off 95-98% of the populations. The devastation was worst in heavily populated areas, so towns and cities wee pretty much wiped out, as as the main construction material was mostly wood, within 100 years there was little signs left for former cities as they just deteriorated.
When Europeans arrive in mass, they found fields perfect for agriculture because they had been clear by Nativesw many years earlier for growing crops.
Had disease not wiped out most of the naive populations, much of the U.S. (and all of the Americas) might still have been in native hands.
Shows a more sophisticated society also in order to build a structure of such a size.
