Alex Trebek requests prayers from viewers . Maybe god watches tv and will listen to his fans and help this privileged individual over millions of less unfortunate people and starving children.Nonsensical drivel only an indoctrinated individual would believe in . Because of his fans he has led a charmed life for 35 years. He should not be asking them for anything.
I lost someone to cancer 4 years ago. Her sister prayed, I tried to pray even though I don't know how to. And people around me wonder why I'm not a God fan.
Let this be a lesson for all of us. When we are old enough to retire, damnit, retire. There's absolutely no point in working till you drop dead.
In regards to people who claim if they stop working they will die. They are covering up the fact that they save a dime for retirement and can't afford to retire.
Unless you enjoy your work.
@indirect76 who actually enjoys going to work making somebody else rich?
@RobertMartin I do.
Trebek has a disease that is a death sentence. I feel for him because my mother died from the same thing. They say this puts me at risk also. The thing is, prayers to imaginary gods will not help you. My step father just knew that god was going to heal mom. God healed about as many as he healed the last time. Mom lived about as long as anyone else that developed the disease. Perhaps if we had prayed differently and held our tongues in other areas of our mouths. Maybe doing that and then hopping on one foot.
Patrick Swayze died of the same thing but he lived longer than my mom. They say his wife is still so terribly upset with him for dying and leaving her. She was under age when he and Lisa first met. Oh, but Miss Nemi, it was not his fault. He did not want to die and leave you.
I thought his announcement was very brave. I was impressed with how he still had a sense of humor about it. I didn’t have much of an opinion about the man before, but now I very much have respect for him.
How can someone watch that and the only take away be the prayer part?
The reason a nonbeliever would only take away the prayer part is because this is a nonbeliever site and this is what should normally be debated .If this was the Alex Trebek fan club then it would be inappropriate
@HarrySlick That is an appropriate response
Pancreatic cancer is a near definite death sentence. Have a little compassion for those having to deal with that.
I am sorry but I do have compassion, but this is an agnostic site .I am mocking the concept of prayer .Whats the purpose of being on this site if this is not discussed .
Fuck cancer and you if you chose this as your moment to be a heartless bastard.
It's not real, but people believe it is. It gives them comfort. If you wouldn't stand in front of his hospital bed and tell him "none of this prayer bullshit is real and ya gonna die painfully scrub, get rekt" then kindly remember you are making us look like shit and hush. I'm begging you.
We can talk about how prayer is pointless and if the g-o-single d was real he'd certainly be wanting to help all the starving children first or whatever, just not like this. Please?
This is an agnostic site and the post is about the absurdity of prayer .I see nothing wrong with the main point of the post
@juli15 I agree this is a suitable post for a site such as this .
@juli15 Apparently this is a fairly unpopular statement here, but allow me to introduce you all to a little concept called empathy.
What he had the "nerve" to ask for after a stage 4 cancer diagnosis ... yeah, that's not just a post about the absurdity of prayer. That's someone who lacks empathy at worst and tact at best.
Prayer is absurd. Re-read the OP. It's spiteful and malicious all because again, someone who had just gotten a stage 4 cancer diagnosis asked for prayer.
So idc if you're all against me on this. I weep for you if a disbelief in a god has taken away your passion, or compassion for other people.
However, if you could do me a favor and just not speak about your lack of belief outside here. We're on the same team but you're scoring points in the wrong basket.
@Xuande I am with you. I wouldn't wish cancer upon my worst enemy, and we can talk about the stupidity of some of our beliefs in other context. And trust me, we ALL have some stupid beliefs that we carry around. I wouldn't want to be despised at my death bed because of them.
@nonbeliever1 It’s just in poor taste. Very very poor taste.
This is ridiculous! Do you hear yourselves? What the hell does a prayer cost anyone that wants to pray. I don't care how much .money anyone has...cancer is cancer. It's painful, scary, doesn't care if you are rich or poor. Where the hell is your compassion?
I suppose if I though Alex Trebec or any of his family or close friends were going to read this I'd feel bed... He chose the life of a celebrity, chose to make this very personal news public, & certainly knows that there will be all sorts of reactions, including some he didn't like.
by the way, you refer to him as privileged, as if his having become rich means he won't die in pain, or that he is a worthless person. now, i am no fan of his work. i haven't got feelings about him at all except mild annoyance at the life insurance ads. so i looked him up to see whether he was born into privilege (nope, he was the son of a ukrainian immigrant [to canada] and worked his way through college) or if he hoards his money and does dumb stuff with it, and as for that, this is what i found on wikipedia:
"Trebek hosts the annual The Great Canadian Geography Challenge in Canada and previously hosted the National Geographic Bee in the United States. He hosted the National Geographic Bee until 2013. Active with World Vision Canada, a charitable organization, he has travelled to many third-world countries with World Vision projects, taping reports on the group's efforts on behalf of children around the world.
"Trebek and the entire Jeopardy! crew became involved with the USO in 1995 and have appeared on several military bases throughout the world, both in an attempt to find contestants and as a morale booster for the troops.
"In 1998, Trebek donated 74 acres (30 hectares) of open land in the Hollywood hills (worth over $2 million at the time) to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy.
"The American Foundation for the Blind, in 2001, awarded Trebek one of the year's six Access Awards for his role in accommodating notable Jeopardy! champion Eddie Timanus.
"In 2016, Trebek donated $5 million to the University of Ottawa to fund the Alex Trebek Forum for Dialogue, the objective of which is 'to expose students to a wide range of diverse views, through speeches, public panels, events and lectures by University of Ottawa researchers, senior government officials and guests speakers from around the world.' Trebek's gifts to the university, which at the time totaled $7.5 million, also fund a Distinguished Speaker Series, which has included a presentation by Nobel laureate Leymah Gbowee, introduced by Trebek. In 2017, Trebek funded the Alex Trebek Leadership Award at the University of Ottawa, an annual $10,000 award to a summa cum laude graduate who has also demonstrated community leadership."
there still isn't any god, but so what?
g
He seems to to be a nice enough guy,but If I had a list of unfortunate individuals I was going to pray for he would be so far down the list I would not have the time to reach him.An over paid game show host who hasn’t had a hard days work in the last half century has the audacity to ask me to pray for him .Are you kidding?
Excellent reply.
People should pray for other Individuals and not ask people to pray for themselves .To me this reeks of being self centered .But the concept of prayer is so absurd it’s a nonissue.
I most certainly agree. Most of these comments are ridiculous. The concept of prayer should be discussed not the virtues of a celebrity or the horrors of cancer .I am sure the member who submitted the post did not have this in mind .
I know two people who died from this. They went very fast. If we can not sent prayers, we can at least send thoughts.
Trebek is 78 years old, he's had one helluva successful career.
He's got a nice family, from all reports.
He's had a good run, and his time is nearly up.
I've know three people who were told that they had pancreatic cancer.
They were ALL dead within four months of getting the diagnosis.
Yes, it's absurd to request prayers from anyone, for anything.
I think it's a desperate gambit no matter who is doing it.
However, being desperate makes delusional people do increasingly stupid things.
Like asking for prayers when they know they're dying.
i don't care. let him. he's dying. you wanna write him a mean letter telling him to cut it out, even if it's the only thing that makes him feel better? what if millions of starving kids are also praying, or asking for prayer? wanna write them a mean letter too? if it makes you feel better to qvetch here, just be aware that your complaining about trebeck doesn't feed any hungry kids either.
g
The point is the starving children deserve to be helped before him .Why the hell would I write them a letter .I would not criticize them if they were praying .If praying was real they are the ones who should be helped before him
@Emanuele i'm sorry, did you actually think i didn't get your point? i was dismissing your point. there is no god so who is being mistreated here by the request for prayers? he is asking on his own behalf because he is dying. it's ridiculous but it's not actually hurting anyone. it's not as if he is diverting real help from hungry children by asking people to ask a mythical god for help. and did he specify that he wanted prayers for god to cure him, which isn't going to happen, or for him to go to an equally impossible heaven? ugh, it's a weird thing to be upset about.

Alex Trebeck essentially is living his last few months - and they likely won't be easy. And he's known to be a pretty kind dude. A little compassion wouldn't kill ya would it ?
There are many situations that are dire in this world. Any gods watching TV will not change them.
unfortuntely, there will be no supernatural help for Alex or the children.
i can't really fault him for asking for the fan's prayers.
Lighten up dude! Alex seems like a nice guy, and he's likely to die in a couple years. Give him a break.
I'm thinking a lot sooner than a couple years, unfortunately. Shame. As you said, he's a nice guy.,
@chucklesIII It took both Michel Landon and Patrick Swayze so very fast.
Once you're diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer - 4-8 mos is the average survival time.
Not good at all .
@evergreen Yeah our next door neighbor made it a whole 8 months.
The weird fact about pancreatic cancer is not that it's actually a particularly difficult cancer; it's that it's totally without symptoms at first, and once you have symptoms it's too far advanced to do anything about. Ruth Bader Ginsburg beat pancreatic cancer because they stumbled upon it early enough. That happens occasionally, someone does some radiological workup over an unrelated matter and spots a tumor on the pancreas, they take it out, and all is well. In fact the same thing happened to her again just recently, they took an xray when she fell and broke a couple of ribs and found a tumor in her lung and took it out.
I remember him making a surprise appearance on the X-Files. Cool guy!
