Atheism is just another religion. Here’s why:

  1. You spend too much time thinking about the existence of God.
  2. You attempt to convince others of your belief, and get angry when they don’t subscribe.
  3. You sometimes establish churches and practice elaborate sets of rituals supporting your creed.
  4. You ridicule supposedly “weaker” forms of the true Atheistic belief system (i.e. Agnosticism, Humanism, etc.)
  5. You hold meetings and appoint Atheists to formal roles within the association.
  6. Many of you turn to Atheism as a reaction against Religion.

Comments anyone?

I've learned by reading this. Mainly, you have no idea what you're talking about.

Awesome Point Generator.

Like a good one time pull start... I noticed he started at level 1... at least that is what I thought I saw. Orange when i looked again.

@larsatrg And he hasn't responded to anyone... hmm.... Well now I'll be following him. Just to make sure this isn't some sort of shenanigans.

Interesting he's been removed from the site! He was a scammer apparently.

I thought he looked familiar! lol

For #1: No. For #2-6: No.

Well stated.

  1. Last time I went to the Atheist church, we had to sit in the pews for hours. Then the cooked baby turned out to be a very dry cracker and some fake wine. There was no orgy, or naked dancing round the bonfire or anything like that, so I did not put the recommended ten pounds in the box.

The word "Religion" typically applies to the faith based worship of some form of deity and includes fanciful notions of such things as miracles and the afterlife and is usually based on some holy book upon which the faith is founded and outlined. Atheism is none of these things.

What you describe could be applied to any idea popular enough to be embraced by a significant number of people: climate change, gun control, good oral hygiene. Are these things also religions to you?

Your definition of what is a religion is in error so your argument is in error.

5

Maybe you do, but I don't. I have never had an atheist knock on my door trying to shove his views onto me. I have never seen an atheist church anywhere. I don't think about God unless some idiot is trying to convince him that there is one. I questioned the ridiculous passages in the bible and ask the questions that they could not answer and told me to just have faith when in Catholic school at a very young age.

Considering Atheism a religion, is like considering Not Smoking a habit, or Not Stamp Collecting as a hobby.
Look up some definitions Bro, like religion or Atheism, or both....LOL

4

It appears that I'm not a "true" atheist. None of those things are true with me.

4

Only someone who has no idea what Atheism is, has never really been around non believers, and been brainwashed by his religion would even put forth such an ignorant list of things Atheists never do. It's the equivalent of saying motorcycle riding is a religion, or exercising is a religion.
Thanks for the chuckle! ?

I am a confirmed atheist, and none of your purported points describes or applies t me. Ergo, you are dead wrong.

  1. God does not exist, ergo is irrelevant. I do not waste a second of my day on the concept.
  2. I have the right to believe as I choose, and so does everyone else. My wife is a devout Catholic, and we respect each other;s' rights.
  3. I want nothing to do with any church or formal organization of atheists which meets regularly
  4. I do not waste my time in fruitless discussions of religion.
  5. 5.I have never been to a meeting of atheists, and have no need to do so.
  6. 6I have no idea of what the relevance of this statement is.

Be careful of reaching false conclusions and then stating them in public.

"Confirmed atheist" By an Ordained atheist? Thanks.

@Jacar I should have used the phrase "doubt-free" atheist. I am totally convince of my stance.

Hi Mark,
Can you back up your points with evidence?

3

I don't know of any Atheist meetings or social groups, other than this website of course. This sounds like a bunch of malarkey to me.

@Shouldbefishing ok so there's a convention. By that definition the RNC and DNC are also religions.

  1. It is pervasive and we have no choice in most cases because we are fucking surrounded on all sides by it
  2. We don't try to convince anyone... we encourage people to think critically and draw their own conclusions. We get angry because we often find out that our friends are incapable of critical thinking because it has been stolen from them by religion, and it sucks.
  3. This is utterly, patently false... unless you are talking about The Satantic Temple, who are fighting (holy) fire with (unholy, yet morally superior) fire for the socio-political benefit of all.
  4. Some of us see the fence riding as "wishy washy"...
  5. You mean we have organizations that want to help the community that doesn't shove fairy tales down said community's throat, and would rather simply help because it is needed? The horror...
  6. No shit. This is not even a thing, as most religious do NOT turn to religion against atheism... false equivalency. Suicidal people off themselves as an alternative to religion... is suicide a religion in and of itself also? Here's something we atheists have over the religious... logic. Look it up.

Uh, no. Atheism is not a religion. The poster has made several assumptions that are not valid. For instance, atheists do not necessarily spend a lot of time thinking about the non-existence of god(s). Once one has come to this (correct) conclusion, we are free to spend our finite mental energy on other, more important matters. And we do. Neither do most atheists go around trying to convince others of their position vis-a-vis the human invention known as a deity. And we don't go out of our way to ridicule people who believe in god(s). However, an atheist may occasionally find it necessary to rebut the ridiculous assertions made by a believer. The rebuttal may seem like ridicule to the believing person who has made a ridiculous statement (e.g. "the Earth and all it life forms were created in six days" ). Do atheists hold meetings? Yes, occasionally. So do bird watchers and motorcycle enthusiasts. A meeting does not make a religion. Finally, atheism is not so much a reaction as a conclusion. After being bombarded for years or decades with ridiculous assertions for which no legitimate, independently verifiable evidence was ever offered, an intelligent person can finally say "Enough!"

3

Thank you for telling me what I believe and what I do. Given the fact that every one of your statements is demonstrably false, I believe I can deduce the source of your misinformation: religious screeds. It seems to me that anyone who spends asmuch time as you do thinking about what atheists believe must be intrigued by the idea and not a little unsure about his own beliefs.

3

You spend too much time thinking about the existence of God.
Speak for yourself
You attempt to convince others of your belief, and get angry when they don’t subscribe.
Atheists do not believe. Belief is the problem. Belief is taking something as true you don't know is true. Believe nothing; seek to know
You sometimes establish churches and practice elaborate sets of rituals supporting your creed.
Rubbish
You ridicule supposedly “weaker” forms of the true Atheistic belief system (i.e. Agnosticism, Humanism, etc.)
It's called debate and discussion. Not absurd bland generalisations, like your post
You hold meetings and appoint Atheists to formal roles within the association.
Nope
Many of you turn to Atheism as a reaction against Religion.
Atheism is contentless.

3

I am an atheist and absolutely none of that applies to me..

Ridiculous

No I don't!

My friend was wrong then, when he told me that any girl from Accrington will do anything. Or maybe he was just thinking of a more limited range of activities.

Interesting. I personally don’t know of anyone fitting these bullet points but I’m sure they exist. I’m inclined to agree that someone matching up with these qualities could be categorized as religious, zealot, fanatic, extremist, etc.

I think you could port this over into other domains beyond religion like sports (I live in SEC football country, believe me, it’s crazy here), fanatical nationalism, and really any other identity group one becomes so obsessed with they become highly irrational. The, yes, that becomes a religion.

This is interesting - I can't link to this member profile - but I can still hover on it.

Addendum: Just made myself a pretzel figuring out he was a scammer after all - and must have been removed. When I went to block him to report the glitch and avoid embarrassment for the dude - found out he's not on site any longer.

"Watchers" I do love a closed case even if I come in at the end of it.

To be sure... Where do you get this stuff from? LMAO ?
