How many on here either have decided to abandon major social media platforms (FaceBook, Twitter, Instagram, etc) or never joined them to begin with? If so, what were your reasons for doing so - privacy concerns? Too much narcissism in those environments?
I was on Facebook until 8 yrs ago. People can't handle the kind of truth I throw at them and so I just stopped. It's too frustrating trying to talk to a bunch of dumbass believers who mostly care about keeping up with the Joneses. As for the other social sites, never tried. My ex was obsessed with Facebook; she would be on it for hours. Classic narcicist that took pix of herself all the damn time! I mean, really, don't you think the first 10,000 shots were enough? The answer is no! I'm thinking about starting back on facebook but only for selling the chairs I'm building or looking for work. But I'm afraid some asshole from my past will find me and piss me off! Someone will undoubtedly ask me to go to their church and then yada yada yada! Or I can just maintain the status quo!
Love connecting with like-minded activists on Facebook. Hate their heavy handed gatekeeping, even more so that my participation puts money in Zuck's pocket. They label political speech "hate speech" when discussing apartheid Chosanistan, but provide zero details when asked for.
Very Kafkaesque.
"How many fingers, Winston?"
Abandon? I never joined! I have a phone and text message. Good enough.
Social media is a pain in my ass. I'm on FB but use it, maybe, twice a week for ten mins at a time. That's it. I tried Twitter and found I had no use for it at all. Never bothered with any of the others. I believe this is a result of my generation. As a baby-boomer, I had none of this until the last 10 years or so at most so it's just not that critical to me.
I'm sure I'd feel very different if I were a Millenial.
I'm 34 and am no fan of those platforms.
Social media is bullshit. If you go against the grain and speak out against the establishment you will get banned.
Right. No one posts photos when they're having a bad day too.
I never joined Twitter, Instagram, Flickr, Tumbler, Pinterest, Reddit, etc.
They are a massive time-suck.
@BeerAndWine
I still have a Facebook account.
I saw an item on a TV show this evening called Mediawatch. They highlighted the amount of fraudulent click bait ads that are promoted on FB. Too shonky, too stupid. It makes this arrogant intelligenci feel ill. As for Twitter, Instagram, et al. I have no idea what they are!
Was told to do Facebook to promote my business, never got so bored in my whole life.
Me too, same with LinkedIn. Couldn’t engage withFacebook as I could never be bothered with it. You watch a few exchanges between people and it soon turns into a shit fight! Not for me. I don’t care enough about the colour of lids for peanut butter!
I only do face book and I think they need to be fined and regulated I don't do other shit face bok keeps me up with pic of great grands far away
I was on fakebook for a while but closed it 4 years ago due to threatening behavior from another user. I was suspended from twitter for telling Mike Pence he was a liar and I hope that he ends up dying in prison. I also don't want to help zuckerberg make any more money than he already does. He stole the idea for fakebook from other people, and he steals information from everyone who uses his platform to enrich himself. The only social media site I use is this one.
Never joined Twitter or Instagram. I don't need to know every thought everyone has at every moment.
Never been a big fad person in the first place. I mainly use Facebook to find old friends and keep up with those who are scattered across the planet.
I think it stops counting as a fad when your user count goes over 2 billion (Facebook).
I can't remember the name of one social media I left three decades ago. It was barely functional and I kept getting messages asking me if I wanted to pay to join porno sites. The ads were so frequent that it was becoming difficult to exchange messages. Searches for messages groups was likely to turn up the first 102 inactive groups.
Got kicked off and banned from Facebook. I'd said a true Christian is a fictional character because nobody can point one of those rare creatures that never sin out to anyone.
Left AOL chat rooms because it was like swapping bumper stickers. I think I'd have the same experience with twitter and that's why I haven't joined it.
Dropped pen interest because it seemed like it was mostly stuff to get me to buy other stuff and look at the drawings of failed artists. There didn't seem to be any group discussions. It may have changed since then.
Left one social media because it was made up of a series of volunteers that couldn't keep their hardware working.
Because I'm a grumpy cuss, I got kicked off a largely inactive social media site without ever putting in an application to join. I got a reputation they heard about from somebody else in Naples, Florida. I try to console myself realizing they rarely got anyone to post on their system and dismissing them as gullible assholes.
thought about FB b/c my son-in-law is a sociopath who has a alienated me from my daughter & grand daughters. if i had a FB account at least i could tell my side of the story. also thought of youtube. but then, i wonder what the fck is the point.
