“The Satanic Temple believes that religion can, and should, be divorced from superstition. As such, we do not promote a belief in a personal Satan,” the organization added.

I Luv It !

The sad thing is that there has been infinitely more people murdered in the name of god than Satan. I’m not defending Satan because I don’t think he exists but look at the evidence. If you compare the damage done by the churches against the damage done bunsatanists. It’s not even close.

Nevermind the countless cases of child molestation in the Catholic church and their systemic cover-up, as is also true on a smaller scale in the Jahovas and The Mormons; ironically at the same time as Christians spread false accusations and constructed a conspiracy theory claiming that there were wide spread pedophile rings and secret societies that molested children as part of some Satanic cult mind control plot

I find this fascinating. The very effort to allow an alternate view to be shared ends up with a complete shutdown of all views. Rather than hear views one does not agree with, people would rather hear nothing, and our democratic ways continue to be eroded.

IMO, Satanism only exists to counter the absurdity of Christianity/Judaism/Islam. It is only good for instances like the one described in the story.

Satanists have done quite a bit to cause otherwise staunch Christians to appreciate our tradition (at least on paper) of separation of church and state. Several years ago, Oklahoma passed a law which said all religions were welcome to erect a religious monument on public property. It was in response to actions initiated to have a Ten Commandments monument removed from in front of a court house. The first applicants were Satanists who proposed a goat headed statue of Satan with numerous Satanic symbols. The state committee approved the statue and a couple modified ceremonies were conducted before the uproar from other religions (perhaps more than just Christians) caused Oklahoma lawmakers to repeal their law and voluntarily move the Ten Commandments monument io private property nearby. As I understand, the Satanists statue was set up in an undisclosed location (somewhere in Michigan I believe). A photo of the statue may still be on-line.

Something similar occurred in Florida when laws were passed to allow religious organizations to come nd make a presentation to school kids. After an atheist organization, and again, Satanists wanted to take advantage of this law, Florida lawmakers decided it wasn't such a good idea after all.

Just curious how atheism was defined as a "religious organization" under Florida law. It's like saying that baldness is a hairstyle. 😀

@Piratefish - I don't recall that atheism was explained how it qualified under that Florida law. Perhaps as anti-religion? The question you asked wasn't addressed in the article.

Yes!
These groups are using the Satanist church to keep us cognizant if the separation of church and state.

I would also like to see meetings that start with prayers given to the Flying Spaghetti Monster!

If it eliminates the invocation, fine, but I sure hope she doesn't link Satan worship to Atheists. The Satan stuff is silly.

The Satanic Temple is nontheistic and quite political

Very cool group

@darthfaja , @Cecilia2018 I am familiar with the group. There is absolutely no need to use the word Satan as part of the name of the group that is attempting to do good or push a nontheistic agenda. It will most likely serve to make others take them (and by association Atheists) less seriously. For that matter, there is no need to use the term Temple, either. Temples are places of worship.

Personally, as an Atheist, I am not interested in supporting any community bearing the name of a supernatural authority.

@itsmedammit
Understandable but it’s done in principal and I love it!
So much I joined 😊

@itsmedammit I understand that you don't like the Satan name. I think the Satan name is very interesting and smart choice that will educate some people's superstition.
Hail Satan!

@itsmedammit
We use the name Satan because we are Satanists. You might hot get it... truth is you don't have to. Most people won't get it, that's ok. But it's not just a snarky ploy, we are Satanists. Yes we are atheistic but atheism only says what we don't believe. There's a certain type of person who becomes a Satanist, and I'll tell you that we tend not to be the type too concerned with if others like us

@PolyComrade , @Cecilia2018, It's a free country, you can worship whom/whatever you want.

@itsmedammit , Of course this is the beauty!

P.s. - it was an invocation, not a prayer. Prayer suggests a belief in the supernatural and otherworldly beings.
It was a pretty good invocation too, all the stuff about letting that which can not strand in the face of knowledge be destroyed...

Hail Satan

Hail Satan! The good pal from the Bible.

Good.

Everyone's apparent cheering notwithstanding, I wouldn't want to hear that any more than I would want to hear "in Jesus name!"

Prayer is prayer, I suppose.
The Satanic Temple only does it to make a point.

And now, thanks to that being said, you won't hear either.

Whole point.

Fandamntastic!!!

Heil Iris !

On the edge of victory! The elimination of religious invocations by governmental bodies is the ultimate goal.
