Comparative Gun Laws around the world - just for interest.

I keep trying to figure out what it is in our country. Did we watch too many movies about the wild west and cowboys that everyone thinks s/he is John Wayne? Our country is also filled with such rage and hate that I wonder what will save us. I have often wondered if our original history of expansionism and taking the Natives' land was the start to the thinking that we can do anything we want and have anything we want. Also as I mentioned in someone else's post only about 40% of Americans own guns legally so how is it that these 40% keep us locked in this mess. Is it all about NRA and their power?
@Allamanda I just had comments that are scary to me on the Gun Control group. It is in the string with the original post showing a mom and her child going to the mall in body armor. The person interacting with me just seems to be in that category of right wing way off the chart. If you have time take a look at that post and comments. No wonder we are in such a mess.
Our "Gunfighter Nation" mythology really started with Cooper's "The Leatherstocking Tales" & continues today throughout our entertainment media. We as a people are steeped in this false view of our history. I'm confident that it will continue.
@Allamanda I'm not sure what I think beyond "Whoa Dude what is up with you" but then I've had a few others on this site with views even weirder than his. I try to keep an open mind because we all come from different places and social mores. I think for me I felt that since this is a group of non believers that they are open minded and I'm finding that it isn't the case, even based on some people's very inability to be open minded about anything that anyone posts and sometimes the answers are borderline mean and rude - I just don't get it. But then look at Facebook LOL!
@bigpawbullets James Fennimore Cooper, the creator of the adventure tale. He also set the tone and the coming lore of the American West and the noble, yet savage, native. Yep. Wrote my last paper in grad school on Cooper and, I borrowed from DH Lawrence's essay "The Metaphysics of Indian Hating" in which I ventured into film depictions, especially John Ford (If you quote from a film, the director gets credit in the citations).
@Beowulfsfriend
The myth is strong in our culture. I flew for the Air Cavalry in Vietnam. We were issued campaign Stetsons as part of our uniforms. The Gunfighter Nation.
Makes me sick that this country just can’t seem to get assault weapons out of the hands of the regular population! The Constitution was written long ago when the choice was only muskets! We need to go back to at least one shot at a time!
Yes. I can just picture the French Resistance using muskets against the Nazis! That would have been real effective!
@Renickulous oh fuck, here we go again.
@Renickulous Hitler disarmed the undesirables, not the whole population as you originally claimed - never quote anything Ben Carson says. Also, there were enough armed citizens where they could have risen up but didn't- so one has to question if it's even worth it, since the stated intention was never used. Is there an instance it has ever been used? Give me a success story, please.
And seriously, do you think a group of folks with ar15s have even a snowballs chance in hell against our military? That's what this is supposedly about, after all.
