Does anyone else think Boris Johnson is now out of his depth, floundering and making one blunder after another? Even his brother has jumped ship, that is very telling, when even your own brother can’t support your actions. He is no longer in control of events, and Parliament is once again in control, which it always should be in a Parliamentary democracy. I think Cumming’s strategy has backfired spectacularly, and all Boris can do now is react to events and is no longer able to dictate them. There are no negotiations going on between his government and the EU, so there is no prospect of a new deal. and the steps MPs have taken to stop us leaving the EU without a deal on 31st October, make it clear that he will be forced to ask for an extension to article 50 from the EU, although he’s adamant that he won’t.
He wants a General Election, but the combined opposition parties, including his own rebels prevent him from commanding a majority to allow him to call one. He is in a mess of his own making, and he may just go down in history as the PM with shortest tenure in British history. What an irony...considering his whole political career has been focused on that one aim..to be Prime Minister!
He appears to be the UK's trump. So sorry you're having to go through that.....
Thanks...sympathy in both directions!
I don't have a problem with Brexit ...either way ... there are arguments for both
I like the peace that has been maintained
I like the free trade across europe
I dislike the concept of a federal europe,
I dislike the concept of western europe paying to rebuild eastern europe
Most of all ... I dislike the UK parliament disregarding the instructions of voters
Johnsons problems are with MPs who simply do not want to leave the EU
No...his problem is not with Parliamentarians of all complexions who are putting the country first to prevent a catastrophic “no deal” Brexit, it’s because he is telling lies about trying to get a better deal with the EU, when he’s trying to run down the clock and crash out without a deal on 31st Oct., entirely a problem of his own making. We were promised we’d get a good deal and that it would be the easiest deal in history. Nobody ...not even the most ardent Brexit voters can want the economy to suffer to the degree it will if we leave without a deal...it is suicidal to do so. Cameron is to blame for giving us a binary choice without a built in percentage margin of at least 10%, but in any case it was only an advisory referendum, and we are allowed to change our minds now that we see all the glaring disadvantages and blatant lies and misrepresentations. To keep charging out of the EU at all costs is not being responsible, and the first responsibility of our MPs is to look after the interests of the electorate who voted for them. That is why we have a parliamentary democracy and don’t rule by referenda and plebiscite, and that’s why parliament has to have to final say in any deal or indeed “no deal”.
@Marionville Having read quite a bit of rhetoric about a 'No Deal' I have no firm conclusion.... so please tell me why leaving the EU on WTO rules is so catastrophic
Stick a fork in him!
It’ll take more than that I’m afraid.
@Marionville Sorry... American humor. Stick a fork in him... He's DONE!
@RiverRick ah...!
Boris is Your Orange Communist Turd . They are just alike and disaster follows their every move .
We feel your pain .
Thanks.
Well he has now equaled scump in our news here......& its not flattery.
What a sorry state we’re in.
@Marionville Its shocking to us to keep seeing these horrid messes!
BoJo is a priviledged, spoilt git. He so much like DJT, its unreal. He is not particularly intelligent or capable. He was a halfassed journo and pissed a lot people off. I despise his sort. There are intelligent, hard working people on council estates who will never get anything like his priviledge. Do not be fooled...his ilk and Jacob Reese Mogg are selling the working class to the slavery of no minimum wage, no worker's rights and wholesale selling off of the NHS! They will divide the poor along racial lines so they can control us all. Tory Scum
No minimum wage? There are some Republicans pushing that here in the states. Ugh!
All he seems to have left is his optimism, which is totally misplaced anyway
He says he will die in a ditch before allowing an extension after 31 October. I can see ditches being dug throughout the country.
He will worm his way out of death in a ditch...and live to fight on no doubt! More’s the pity!!
The usual leader who can't lead. He criticizes the other PM's yet hasn't a clue what it takes to get things done. I fear Britain will get just what they asked for and be on their own. The many times I had visited there I sensed an air of them versus the 'continent'. In the end the Germans will gain the upper hand.
The upper hand in Europe you mean I presume....as the dominant economy they have always been pivotal, but the EU structure is purposely democratic, in as much as all countries have equal votes and vetoes in policy and decision making.
@Marionville I understand much of the role of the states in the EU. The Germans are the strongest and a lot of the push to form the EU came from them (I was living there when it all started). They are determined to change the worldview of their country and try an erase the horrors of WWII. Much of the Eu is socialistic and it can work. My big concern is population growth. The countries are relatively small and the densities continues to grow. The UK has a huge density and I can imagine a lot of the problems stem from that.
@JackPedigo It’s really only the cities that are high density....successive governments have not invested in new housing and up to date transport links...there is a big north/south divide in the UK, too much wealth in the southeast and London, neglect and lack of opportunity in the north when traditional industries like coal, steel and shipbuilding became uncompetitive and went out of business. Scotland is empty except for the lowland belt...they need to get control of their own economy...because Scotland’s needs are very different from England’s...they need more immigration not less.
@Marionville I understand what you mean. I remember visiting Newcastle several times in the 70's. Unfortunately it was still pretty dirty and poor. A friend's brother was a university professor and he still lived in an old brick row house.
I see things differently and, as far as the environment goes no one, especially countries that have excessive carbon footprints and greenhouse gas emissions do not need more immigration and increase their impact.
This will come down to another vote over leaving the EU.
I hope so...but no guarantee..
@Marionville I hope so, too, but as I've mentioned before it should be more than a simple majority vote.
I was in London last month for a 1 night layover, and literally EVERY person I came in contact with - taxi drivers, Hippodrome dealers, and numerous locals across Piccadilly - all were deeply embarrassed by the current administration and predicament. I felt their pain and they felt mine as we engaged in dual, commiserating bitch-fests.
One thing is for certain in my mind: sociopathic narcissists (like those two twits) will never admit they are wrong, out of their league, or inept. Hang in there - it's a wild ride - no question!
One of my pet peeves is how blatantly pro Tory the BBC has become. Boris' performance at question time was shambolic - Corbyn ran rings around him. You'd never know it if you only watched the Beeb.
Sorry ...on this I don’t agree. In fact the BBC is considered to have a left wing bias by many in the Tory Party. I think on balance they try to be as evenhanded as possible, but each presenter brings their own bias with them. Question time goes to great lengths to try to get a balanced audience and panel for their live programme...my main objection to it is the presenters, David Dimbleby and now Fiona Bruce have too much to say, interjecting instead of allowing the panel to speak.
They not pro-Tory, just anti-Corbyn, there is a difference.
@273kelvin true.
@Marionville I meant prime minister's question time in parliament. Boris was hopeless. The Tories were cringeing behind him.
As for the program, the panel is always stacked to the right. I mean, how many times have they had bloody Nige on, and he doesn't even have a seat in parliament!
@MrBeelzeebubbles Last night was shambolic...they were all talking over each other, but they had 3 remainers and 3 brexiters. The audience was pretty half and half too. I did watch PMQs on Wed. I saw Boris and his less than sterling performance.
And if the government resigns? What then? Can any other party/parties form a government. Could they even agree on who would hold what political offices, let alone be Prime Minister?
The likely outcome would have to be a MANDATORY general election, after having even more time and money wasting. How much has Gina Miller's "ego trip" challenge cost taxpayers in legal fees?
I don’t know the answer to the question about Gina Miller...I suspect it is being funded by wealthy backers not taxpayers. There will obviously be an election some time soon, but not before NO DEAL is taken off the table..that is now clear. Boris is a known liar who is playing power struggle games with Parliament, the winner must be Parliament because anything else would set a dangerous precedent for other would be dictators to emulate
@Marionville Shame there's no device invented yet to look into the future.
... or maybe it has been invented, but the big betting companies, including Camelot, bought the patent and have suppressed it!!!!!
@Petter Maybe were better off not knowing!
@Marionville ......... but I want to win the lottery before they suppress the invention.
If the govt resigns a temporary govt of national unity could be formed by opposition groups. This would not have to have Corbyn at the head but probably would. It may be formed on the strict understanding that it is only there to halt a no-deal exit and to call an election soon after that had been atchieved
It bewilders me that an intelligent country like Britain saw what a drooling moron America put in charge then found someone as close as possible to him to put into office there. They went out and found their very own Donald Trump and made him their leader.
WHY??
He wasn’t elected by the country...only a small number of people...those who are Conservative Party Members....and only two thirds of them voted for him. He is an illegitimate PM as far as I’m concerned, and the quicker we get rid of him the better.
@Marionville We live with that same pain every day.
@Sgt_Spanky Trump wasn’t elected with only 92,00 votes though! I do understand your point though.
@Marionville Actually due to our Electoral College trump won in three states with less than 88,000 thousand votes I believe. I'd like to see the end of the Electoral College.
Another nail in the coffin is the statement put out today by the Police Chief of West Yorkshire. He stated (and this is not a direct quote) that BJ should not have used the backdrop of police recruits as a platform for electioneering, in Wakefield, yesterday. The arrangement was that BJ would give a speech about police recruitment only, but when the camera crews were assembled with journos, BJ went off-script and gave a blatant election speech, even giving a Q&A session to journos at the end. Another hole in his collander-like foot.
Yes...so many gaffes in such a short time....but we knew about his opportunism and incompetence already. Sacked from numerous jobs because he was caught lying, and is the cause of Nazanin Zachariah-Ratcliffe having her sentence lengthened in Iran when he “misspoke” when giving a statement when he was Foreign Secretary. The man is so full of hot air and braggadocio I’m surprised he hasn’t self combusted!
@Marionville I'm surprised he has not yet got his head stuck up his own bottom. Still time, I suppose...
@Red_Cat we can but live in hope.
It's almost as if he and our guy are twin sons of different mothers. We are all looking rather foolish right now as countries.
Absolutely...we’ve put the lunatics in charge of the asylum!
At least he is being ' found out ' in a short space of time. I heard that particularly Cummings is very keen in blogging and assertion terms on war gaming and game theory. This last way of looking at things is all very well and has been going on for eons but once you base your plan on historical events or try as an individual to think up all the possible inputs and outputs then you have lost touch with reality as another group of individuals CAN think up plenty of variables that you have not thought of.
The only really bright spot in all this mess is that the Tories are tearing themselves apart. Cummings has been called out for not even being a Party member! This present uber-right -wing cabal who are running the government are so blinkered in their ideology they can’t see that they are in a minority within the party...is there ever going to be such a thing as a “one nation Tory Party”, that the more moderate ones talk about...or has it always been only a myth of their own imagination?
@Marionville Once Cummings gets his cum-uppance he will, no doubt, be hired by Farage. What a gang of rogues we have at the moment.
@Red_Cat They would be a marriage made in hell!
@Marionville Yes, worse than having the C man with BJ. A dangerous combination.
