My agnostic husband and deeply religious father started having a debate about whether or not God is logical. It ended up being a little bit like a yelling match. There is really no getting anywhere at that point. Basically, both are just trying to be right. :/
Maybe it's times like that it would be good to just take a moment and try to boil down a common denominator, something both parties can believe in, a belief which makes them the best person they can be whether god is logical or not. (Taking God out of the equation) And see if they can agree that whether god exists or not, at least they have those values in common.
I feel it's best to leave the conversation with something positive, and then agree that there may be many different paths which all lead to the same goal: Good people, a better humanity, and hope for the future.
Everyone is on their journey to find out. I suggest that you offer some reading material if he is really interested in finding out. Try John Loftus' stuff.
Huh. Ok.
@Biblebeltskeptic Obviously you don't think much of my suggestion. It's been my experience that only when a person is receptive to critically examining one's beliefs are they then open to a different pov. There's lots of info to be accessed if one is honest in one's quest for the truth.
Story told to me
A priest starts trying to convert a native america telling him to worship God and ask for forgiveness for his sin and God would accept him into the kingdom of heaven.
The man replied I did not know of your God and carried on sinning would I still go to heaven.
The priest replied he would has he did not know of the teachings of God.
The man replies then why did you tell me.??
Two Egos in a useless conversation, neither one will convince the other and yet the world moves on. Hopefully they can shake it off and find more meaningful things to discuss, we have to be okay with having different positions.
Personally, I stop conversations about politics or religion before they start. But in this case, you weren't a participant and you had no say in what your two guys discussed - which makes it tough to watch. I hope they patched it up at the end and left as friends who agreed to disagree.
The logistics of a god that requires a human sacrifice to forgive "sins", something god created in the first place, should be indefensible I would think, especially one that was more evil than Thanos himself
PS: I never get angry over such discussions, it takes away from the logic to become emotional.
Sounds like a good topic for them to avoid in the future.
Sounds a lot like the male species
"Male" is not a species.
@Kaiser_Soze correct! How should I write this?
@twill
Maybe: "That sounds a lot like men, in general" or "That sounds a lot like most men"?
Both should start acting like adults and avoid the subject (s)!!!!!!!
It has been accepted for 1000s of years that People are gods. This is what people have approved and accepted as to what is written. "Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your Law, 'I have said you are "gods"'?John 10:34
Here is the logic: People are Christians because what is written about what jesus supposedly said. People are gods. Gods exist. What the biblical text explains is that those considered Christian are the "body" of Christ with the mind of Christ. What this is explaining is 'God" in the big sense is something like saying nation but called church. Church, God people, are not confined to national borders or genetics. And the Christian, "child of God" is like saying citizens or a member of the body. So the 'Big" God is collectively all the Christian's, and each Christian is a little God or child of god. The biblical text is refered to as "word of God" written by people-Gods.
Atheism or atheist would be illogical saying "gods" do not exist because it is very well accepted that people are Christian-gods.
The debate illogical atheist wants to make because illogical atheist likes to argue is that willy wanka or harry Potter style Gods do not appear to exist.
What people do not modernly understand is that Jesus style God would be Angelic lord of host Lucifer the devil according to the Jewish writtings of the angels.
@David1955 Although it is impossible to obtain exact figures, there is little doubt that the Bible is the world's best-selling and most widely distributed book. A survey by the Bible Society concluded that around 2.5 billion copies were printed between 1815 and 1975, but more recent estimates put the number at more than 5 billion. [guinnessworldrecords.com]
The biblical text has achieved world record for most copied text of its kind peer reviewed by people for 1000s of years.
People that call themselves Christian are saying the are "children of God". They are saying that they are gods. People accepting to be Christians by accepting they call themselves Christian is that they accept being gods by the title of Christian as already explained.
uts a no win situation. a human isnt going to give up something he has believed in all his life and therefore run his life around intirely. i think hubby is more in the wrong for arguuing knowing what he does.
Tough situation. Both of them should respect the other's point of view in theory. In practice, clash of personalities. I bless my family on this. We respect each other, despite our differences. If both would realise that nobody is going to die because of this difference of points of view would make it a lot easier...
Sometimes the question is, do I want to be right or do I want to be happy? Because achieving both may just not be in the cards.
