Not having been on a real date in a very long time, I was thinking of inviting someone...to be determined...to go out on a date for leap day, as I thought that was a traditional custom. Turns out I was wrong. But I did find this:

Leap Day Customs & Traditions

β€œThere are a variety of Leap Day customs and traditions.
In Ireland, women are allowed to propose to men on Leap Day, instead of the men proposing to them as is usually the custom. This is believed to be a way to balance the traditional roles of men and women. This tradition takes place in other parts of Europe as well. However, in some places, if a man refuses a marriage proposal on Leap Day, then he has to buy the woman 12 pairs of gloves, so she can hide her embarrassment about not having an engagement ring for the next year.”

So, are there any Eirish gentlemen here whom I might start courting now, in case I want to ask NEXT year? The worst that can happen is that I end up with twelve new pair of gloves...

Erin go Bragh. πŸ™‚...

Or Erin Go Bra-less, since it's a feminine tradition..

I never wait for Leap year to ask someone out. I figure I have as much right as the guy I'm asking out. AND, added bonus, being turned down doesn't threaten my masculinity!

I shall lock myself into my house for the entirety of February 29th. I can't afford to buy a gross or more of gloves for all my female adulators!

7

I rather have 12 pairs of new shoes.

I have not been on a real date in a very long time. Leap Day or otherwise. I work my 3 hours, think of some women I want to see locally as I go home, make my appearance wherever they are (usually at their own workplace) and then after a few words i go on home. Most of them don't even know that I care.

Oh for gosh sakes, man, ask one of the ladies who attract you out to dinner!

@Jlad52 I mean really, take a chance, right?

@MissKathleen People around me are either too religious or they are not into my type of politics. I'm very openly a progressive.

@DenoPenno Do you know that the ladies don’t have similar views? Also my parents are totally differing politically, but have been together 45 years!

I wish someone would ask me out. They just ask me to get out.

6

I'd go on a leap day date--of course, you'd have to pay my way to Arizona first, lol.

So that's why people wear gloves! I like to keep people guessing, but it's too warm to wear gloves most of the time where I live, except for costumed events. Oh well!

I do have one couple getting married on Leap Day (I'm an officiant) and I figure they will save 75% of the cost on anniversary gifts, haha!

Woman proposes marriage
Man declines proposal
Man gives woman 12 pairs of gloves to hide her shame

Aren't the gloves then a dead giveaway that she was declined? Wouldn't it be better if she wore no gloves so no one knows she got burned? Seems like a much better way to hide her shame than advertising her inability to land a man with those damn gloves.

You might be overthinking this.

@Kandelka @MissKathleen It's possible, I'm kinda brilliant.

The best thing that can happen is that you get twelve pairs of gloves. Propose to half a dozen men and get a lifetimes supply, and if they say yes, you can always use the womans privilege and change your mind.

4

Try to start a new tradition. They have to start somewhere, don't they?

4

It looks like I need to find myself an Irishman. I. almost have a glove fetish. Did it say whether or not I could specify leather?

I'm partly clan Menzies, does a Scot do anything for you? πŸ˜‰

4

I was hoping someone might jump me in celebration of leap year. So far, no such luck...

@MissKathleen Maybe Jumping Jacks could become a new craze? Jack was my nickname in grad school, it could catch on again.

@MissKathleen When there are several Pauls living in the same quad, so one of us adopts his middle name as a nickname.
We already had a Tall Paul and a Short Paul, so I was running out of alternatives. I didn't want to take a physical description as a nickname, that could have gotten ugly. I've lost a little weight since then. πŸ™‚
Plus, I got to tell people "You don't know Jack."

4

Kathleen, maybe you'll start a tradition. You'll be famous and remain immortal.

4

According to DNA I'm 34 percent Irish . So should I start buying gloves now ? Lol

3

My great grandmother was from county Clare, and I have an amazing collection of work gloves (bordering on a fetish)

@MissKathleen
Have you seen the new ones?
They’re awesome!

3

But why 12 pairs of gloves? Wouldn't you only need 1 pair of gloves to hide the fact you aren't engaged? Also, what do us guys get from the ladies when they refuse our proposals, the rest of the year? This may become a business venture, selling proposal refusal treasure on EBay. πŸ™‚

So you can change them once a month 😊

3

When and where??😎😜
I'm not Englishman, and this is leap year...πŸ˜‚

Well, a halfway point might be NYC... but only if ur single. Considering some of the comments above, I think it’s fair to say I don’t date players.

I'm 1/4 Irish.

A woman can theoretically ask a man on a date any day of the year. And trump can go a whole day without lying.

Name that day........None so far.........

It think the only day tRUMPf will go a day without lying will be the day after he kicks the bucket. He will probably lie on the last day of his life.

2

The 29th was called Sadie Hawkins Day from a popular cartoon in the 50's - Little Abner by Al Capp. On Sadie Hawkins Day, women would ask a man for a date.

2

Or you could be engaged.

It's not just in Ireland. Wiki notes a number of different traditions that vary by region.

"There is a popular tradition known as Bachelor's Day in some countries allowing a woman to propose marriage to a man on February 29.[24] If the man refuses, he then is obliged to give the woman money[25] or buy her a dress. In upper-class societies in Europe, if the man refuses marriage, he then must purchase 12 pairs of gloves for the woman, suggesting that the gloves are to hide the woman's embarrassment of not having an engagement ring. In Ireland, the tradition is supposed to originate from a deal that Saint Bridget struck with Saint Patrick.[26][27]

In the town of Aurora, Illinois, single women are deputized and may arrest single men, subject to a four-dollar fine, every February 29.[28][29]

In Greece, it is considered unlucky to marry on a leap day.[30]"

It's me again. St. Bridget is widely believed to be based on Birgid, queen of the Druid Tuatha da Danaan, and the original Birgid would have nothing to do with St. Patrick who perpetrated a pogrom killing most if not all of the Druids in Ireland.

Women aren't as good at dealing with rejection as men are, probably because we get more of it.

Logical but quaint.

Not Irish sorry too far anyway
